I had posted a few questions in another thread but didn't get any replies with answers to my questions, so I thought maybe it was just overlooked in the heat of the debate whether to go with Abit or DFI. Anyway...I thought I'd try to get a response to these questions in their own thread. I apologize if they are silly questions.
"Just wanted to ask a few questions since this seems like an informed crowd. I myself have an NF7-S in my rig with a 2500+, and have been trying to overclock it. Now...I'm a bit of a newbie, so I decided to follow a few guides and test the bios settings for myself to see if I could get this rig running a little faster. The first thing I tried was to up the FSB with a 1:1 ratio to my ram. I have PC3200 Kingston Value Ram rated at 2:3:3 I believe. I've read all there is to read about the voltage mods and how to get your core voltage higher than the default 1.65v, but looked at the bios, and I'm able to up my core voltage to 1.95v in my standard bios. So I upped my FSB to 190 without a problem with a multiplier of 11x. This was stable...so I was tempted to run it at the ever-so-sweet 220 FSB, and it wouldn't even boot. Turns out the highest my FSB will go is 195. So now...onto the questions.
1) Could it be my ram that is holding me back? Because I notice that you guys who have your FSB way high have some expensive ram in your rigs.
2) I heard that voltage can usually be upped in order to stabilize a system, but are there any drawbacks to upping my voltage? Can I fry my processor by doing so? I'm currently at 1.95 and have option to go higher...should I?
3) I see some of you with 2500+ running at over 2.4ghz...what are your idle and full load temps at that speed. And what would a good cooler be...I'm looking at a few copper thermalrights, but am using an SLK-700 now, and it doesn't seem to be cutting it. Wondering if a larger one would help, or if I should just strap a delta onto that sucker.
4) Is there any reason why most people leave their multipliers at 11x rather than fiddling with that to get higher speeds?
Anyway, I'm running my 2500+ at 2.18ghz now on my NF7-S v.2 and it only took me about 10-15 minutes to get it up from the stock 1.83ghz. I haven't had much experience with the DFI's but have heard both rants and raves about it. So it took me about 10 minutes to fiddle around and get a ~20% oc on my rig. I think that's pretty good. Like I said earlier, I'm a newbie...so take my review for whatever you think it is worth. If anyone can answer my above questions, it'd be greatly appreciated!
