A few question about LCD

Well, I'm doodling around with some LCDs both at friend's home and in stores. Except for the really simple problems like dead and stuck pixels and backlighting issue, I have something not clear:

- A Sony of a friend of mine, during the nokia test, shows a little thing on a certain shade of gray. There's seems to be some vertical lines only in that particular shade (we can reproduce the problem also outside of the nokia test). The problem seems to dimish after playing with the gamma settings. What is it?

- What is the screen door effect??

On the first one I'm not too sure, could be a dithering artifact where the monitor is having difficulty reproducing the exact shade (many of the earlier 16ms and 12ms panels do dithered 18bit rather than true 24bit colour) or moire (but I thought tfts didn't get that).

On the "screen door" effect I'm also slightly uncertain, people seem to be talking about two different things there, but my understanding of the screen door effect relates to the anti-glare coating on some panels.
Most TFT screens are basically lightly frosted/matt finished to prevent reflections/glare, depending on the coarseness of this finish there can be some light image distortion, which manifests as a sort of grainyness, as if you're looking through a screen door. I have a dell 2001fp which, legend has it, is one of the worst sufferers of "screen door", but frankly it's nearly invisble unless your face is 4" from the screen.

Some screens go the other way, like sonys recent ones, and have a hyper-mega-ultra-shiny finish which gives the clearest possible image, presumably at the expense of being sensitive to the placement of surrounding light sources.
