Hey all, how's it going with you on this fine Tuesday?

Anyhoo, I'm going to buy some new comp stuff (as always), and I have my sights set on the Logitech Cordless MX Duo. Now, I know the MX700 rocks, but I was wondering about the Cordless Elite keyboard.

1.) Is it true that the keyboard won't be recognized until you boot into the OS, so I still have to use a wired USB/PS/2 keyboard to access BIOS and the like? Someone told me this a while ago and I haven't read anything about it.

2.) What's the range of the keyboard and the mouse away from the receiver?

Also, I'm looking to get a DVD writer, and I'm debating over two drives on Newegg: the ND2500-A and the Lite-On 811/851.

Right now the two drives have a $10 price difference, and I'll pay extra if the Lite-On is better or has any unique features about it that make it better than the NEC.

All answers, suggestions appreciated. Flames less so. :)

with your question on the range, it all depends. Is it blue tooth or regular? cause the blue tooth's range is higher than the regular wireless. Also your range will be affected by obstructions like walls and large objects such as sofas etc etc. Also with the obstructions, the density of the material can slow the wireless signal down decreasing its range. If your in a open room, your range will be great, in a large room with alot of junk in the way, it will me smaller etc. etc.
 
Yeah, I'm looking at the regular cordless mx duo, not the bluetooth one. The MX700 set uses RF signals I think.

And yeah, I'm in an open room. The case is near my monitor and keyboard/mouse right now on the desk, and the only thing that would really obstruct it would be the case itself or the monitor.

No idea about range and stuff, but I would suggest the MX just for the rechargeability. (Love making new words) Having to keep AA's around for your mouse has gotta suck.
 
The NEC is a faster drive. I don't see any reason not to go with it, especially considering all the good reviews it got.

As for the keyboard, I know nothing.
 
Thanks all for the help. I went with the NEC and the MX Duo set. I asked my friend whose roommates use logitech wireless sets too, and they say it works fine without booting into an OS and such, so excellent.
 
I have pair of MX Duos on a couple of computers and I have found keeping an old plug in mouse and keyboard handy a couple of times. My keyboard will not work when there is a boot problem so I have found having the old keyboard the only way to access the bios. As for the range, I haven't tried going further than my desk top. Since it's RF instead of IR you don't need a "line of sight" to make them work. But, I have found when I use my webcam I have to make sure the cord isn't between the mouse and base. If it is the mouse becomes jerky and unusable.
