I overclocked my 920 to 3.6GHz last night, and I have a couple of quesitons.

1. I'm amazed at how easy it all was. All I did was set the BCLK to 180, and it did everything else for me. It set the memory frequency, the QPI, the uncore, and one other thing. It runs perfectly stable, so I think I did it right, but was there anything else I should have adjusted? I didn't play with voltages or anything.

2. The only other thing that I did was to set the memory to what should be the proper timings. It detected something like 7-7-7-20, but I know the memory I bought is 8-8-8-24, so I set it to that. Should I have left it to auto detect?

3. Speaking of memory, even though the BCLK set everything for me, can/should I increase my memory frequency as high as it will stably go? Does all of that stuff need to be proportionate or something? Or can I just increase what the BCLK setting gave me to up my RAM performance?

4. Now that I know that I'm stable, should I enable turbo mode? I'd probably turn it off for benchmarking and stuff, but if I'm stable without it, will I be stable with it?

5. I read somewhere that you should try and keep your QPI as low as possible, and that they recommended a setting of 4.8. Adjusting the BCLK, though, set the minimum to higher than that. Is that okay?

6. I'm working on some heating issues, and if I get them resolved I'm going to push for 3.8-4.0GHz. If I do lose stability at that point, do I lower my memory frequency, increase my memory voltage, increase my CPU voltage? I'd imagine it's some combination of the 3, and if so, what's the order? And it's a little unclear in the ASUS BIOS which settings exactly correspond to which, they're labeled very technically. Can anyone point out which are the correct settings to tweak?

1. if its running fine and passes all stress tests, then leave it
2. it depends on if the motherboard automatically changed the multiplier on the ram to a lower setting.. if it did then 7-7-7-20 would work fine.. if it didnt then yes it should be 8-8-8-24 (check cpu-z under the memory tab to see if it downclocked the memory or not)
3. it really depends on the memory since your not running a really high overclock it probably wont put that much strain on the NB IMC you might be able to..
4. you could try enabling turbo mode.. it will raise your overclock to 3.8ghz but might be unstable if your still running stock voltages..
5. QPI doesnt need to be lowered i think what they were refering to is the QPI voltage..
6. increase cpu voltage first.. if that doesnt help then lower the memory clock. if that doesnt work then you need to mess with other voltage settings..

I tried going up to 190 on the BCLK last night, still with no voltage increase. I got to 3.8, and it booted okay, but the temperatures jumped very rapidly. It went from 55 to 43 in about a second, seemingly at random, and as soon as I started Prime95, it jumped from the 40s to the 80s, so I'm thinking something was wrong. I'm pretty happy with my 3.6, but just out of curiosity, would increasing voltage help with a thing like that?

Also, I know that increasing voltage general decreases lifespan, but is that just because of the higher heat? If I up the voltage, but manage to keep the temperature the same, is my CPUs lifespan going to stay about the same?
 
Reading your other thread (where after taking your side panel off you hit a more reasonable 71C at load), I think you need to get a new case or mod your existing one. I would opt for a full tower and not a mid-tower unless you want to sacrifice on noise (smaller, but more open = more noise). Or smaller with more fans = also more noise.

I also still think 71Cs is very high for a stock voltage OC...did you apply the paste the normal way or the line method?
 
I have mine running at 3.6ghz, turbo and ht enabled. On stock settings the voltage was showing as 1.200, have it overclocked at this speed with the vcore at 1.18 (llc enabled) This helps keep temps pretty low.

So I should try lowering my voltage? Which, voltage, specifically? There's CPU Voltage, CPU PPL Voltage, QPI/DRAM Voltage, and a few others. And what is llc?
 
As a starting point i dropped the voltages to the following.

CPU Voltage, 1.18
CPU PLL Voltage, 1.8
QPI/DRAM, (AKA VTT) 1.21
dram voltage, 1.64

I then started raising the bclk 10mhz at a time, 133-143mhz and so on, currently sitting at 21x173 stable after 10 passes of IBT. LLC is loadline calibration, this is a feaure that asus use in the motherboards to help lessen the effect of vdroop.
