I am on my laptop right now, cause my desktop has suffered the loss of a heatsink. :(

My specs are as follow:
-AMD Opteron 146 CABYE (OSA146DAA5BN/CABYE 0536 GPMW)
-ASRock 939 dual-sata2 w/ vMod up to 1.55v
-2x256 Crucial Ballistix DDR500
-BFG 6600GT
-OCZ Powerstream 420w

My first question is, seeing how the fan on my CNPS 7700 AL CU died, how feasible is it to run it passive? I have a Coolermaster Cavalier case, so about 2" from the heatsink, there's a 120mm silverstone FM121. I tried a fan transplant (silverstone fm121, another one) and it fell off.

Second: What heatsink do you recommend? I can't use the Thermalright XP 90 or 120 series because my ASRock uses push-pin style bracket, with no backplate, and I don't want to buy a seperate backplate just to use an HSF that doesn't come with a fan. Unless the Zalman CNPS backplate works. I also don't want a Zalman, because I've had 3 zalman's die already, and one of them took out one of my Sandiego's, the other one (a new cnps 9500) killed my Athlon XP.

third: Do you think the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro series is any good? I can get these locally, and I think that's how I'm going to buy it.

So, basicly, can I run a cnps 7700 alcu in passive? If not, what heatsink do you recommend that:
-cheap
-no backplate, or is compatable with the CNPS 7700 backplate.
-Easy to install
-No lighting. I don't wanna be woken up at night by a heatsink that glows.
-Quiet.

Thanks.

I think I've figured it out. Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro.

Opinions?

yes yes and yes. it got that hsf because i got the asrock board and i knew that it had no backplate on it. as you can tell by my sig, i didnt keep the asrock but got the dfi instead. long story short, i still have the arctic cooler 64 pro and it kicks @$$ while still being silent as the grave. it keeps my opty 165 at 27C idle and doesnt go above 38C when running dual prime. i used the thermal compound that came pre-applied and as you can see from my temps, it is really good. if you want a cheap, SILENT and extremely effective cooler, get the arctic cooler 64 pro :D

I have seen people buy a 120 MM fan and cut parts of it away with just the motor and Blades and just hook it up the the base of the Cooler.

I totally agree with Bbq...The Arctic Freezer 7 64Pro will do an excellent job with your cooling solution and has no led's. Every review I've read about it gives it very high marks on cooling and noise.

I have a Cooler Master Cavalier also w/ the Vu meter... nice case ;)

I think I'll go buy one of those ones. I was very, very happy with my Arctic Cooling Freezer 4 for S478. I think this is what I need. Thanks.

My Cavalier is slightly modded. There's pictures in the coolermaster gallery. Still need some window trim and to polish up the exterior away from dull grey.
