Ok i need better sound quality for my HD 555's. Heres my choices
- Upgrade the OP amps using the X-fi Mod
- Purchase a Auzentech prelude for $115 Shipped

I'm pretty sure i will also get a headphone amp later on

Yea i recently got the Hd 555's. Like a week ago actually

Too bad. Hope you got a good deal on them?

Anyway, upgrading to the prelude is not really worth it.

What bothers you about your current setup? Perhaps we can steer you in the right direction.

Upgrading the stereo opamps does not upgrade the DAC and other circuitry which has been designed with top quality in mind on the Prelude.
Get the Prelude if you dont want to compromise.

Selling the x-fi and getting the prelude is an option.Still, need to know what bothers the OP about the sound. The 555s are ok but limited in terms of SQ.

You can upgrade to the prelude and still not like the sound b/c the headphones are bottle necking the whole deal.

Upgrading the stereo opamps does not upgrade the DAC

Well, yeah. Op-amps are gain ICs; in an audio application they're usually acting as either the core of the amplifier, or doing usual duty as a follower/etc (unity gain) to keep things in the circuit under control. Which is why swapping out the op-amps << just getting an amplifier. :D

555s are a bit meh, but at least good enough to start thinking about this stuff.

i had the ath-700s and they were better but i hate the close style.

Im mainly tryin to get the best SQ without killing the bank, but also being able to have my eax/gaming sound

The AD700s are the OPEN 700s and my recommended version. They are a bit expensive though. The AD900s are really fun too.
