I wouldn't make a blanket statement. The data can be corrupted and transferred to the new drive, but the worst case scenario is that you'd have to format the disk and reinstall.

However, the problem could actually be something else - what power supply do you have? What's on it? What voltage is it putting out (multimeter, not MBM/SF)?

same thing, antec 480. how can I check if it's malfunctioning?

Check the voltages with a multimeter. Radio shack is good enough quality for this application. The voltages should be within 5% of nominal.
