I just got the package with a 8800GS and a Corsair VX550W today so I decided to upgrade a boxen so I can configure a dual-gpu setup (the 2nd 8800GS will be here tomorrow probably). After I replaced the Antec Earthwatts 380W with the Corsair, I started to install the 8800GS then I noticed the Abit IP35-E only have 1 PCI-E slot :eek:

This sucks for me since I truly wanted that box to house the dual-gpu setup and after looking at my farm, the only box I can do is my file server (Asus P5K-E). I didn't really want to setup a dual-gpu under WHS but I guess I don't have a choice (this or doing a musical chair and rebuild my file server from scratch, no thanks!).

Hope others won't make the same dumb mistake as me :eek:

Have you tried to remove a PCI-e GPU? Dang it is hard! I almost broke my motherboard removing one. I did break off the clips holding the GPU in place.



 
I made a similar d'oh myself.

I picked up a BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX with a BE-2400 for a good price and had planned on using both PCIE slots with folding GPUs. Apparently, the only way two cards can be used is with the two being in crossfire mode. One card in either slot, no problem. Two nvidia cards, no dice, no post, no nothing.

Bah. Oh well. My bank account could use a breather, anyway. That gtx260 will eventually get a friend....

More bad news : WHS won't even accept the nvidia driver... I tried both Windows XP and Vista x32 driver and it always stop with a invalid OS error. Upon googling this, I found out nobody is able to install the drivers for it and most recommend using the Windows default driver, which is not what I wanted.

I guess I can forget about running GPU2 on WHS (Kendrak, don't waste your time). I'm now forced to order a Asus P5K/EPU motherboard (cheapest Crossfire board I found which is not crappy). I also thought that since both the IP35-E and P5K-E have the same chipset and southbridge, I might be able to swap boards without problems. This will bring a new plan :

-P5K/EPU on a box with the 8800GT and 9800GT (just rebranded 8800GT so there is no incompatibility for F@H) and Corsair VX550W.
-P5K-E with 2x8800GS and Earthwatts 430W (No much money to afford a new PSU after being forced to spend 150$).

I should have done some research myself.

Somehow I don't feel like I'm as n00bish as I thought. Refreshing to see the big guys fumble occasionally. Sorry to see them fumble, but a releif to knowI'm not far bhind in (bad??) luck.

Time sacrifice some vigin chickens to the folding gods.
 
Don't be sorry, everyone will learn about WHS including myself. Sucks to change the plans and be forced to spend 150$ extra but I think in the end, it's worth every penny. I can also sell the IP35-E since I'm sure someone else would like that board for folding without multi-GPU so watch for a FS thread soon :)

Kendrak, at least you can now change the plans now instead of finding out the same thing as me when you will receive the WHS CD.

 
Hmmmmm, this changes my plans as well. I still have other boxen that have extra PCI-E slots, but was hoping to use my WHS rig. Thanks for sharing Xilikon. Sorry you had to be the guinea pig though. Do you think there is any hope in holding out for a driver that will work in the future?
 
Speaking of, how long have you been waiting on that WHS CD Kendrak? I ordered mine last week and I'm hoping it will be here before I buy the hardware next month (I'd like to test it out before getting the hardware).

For friggen ever!

Every day I come home look in the box, junk, bills, Netflix, no disks :(

Doesn't matter to much now. What I need to do is get raid set up, I have 2x 320 gb drives to use. I'll put all the pics on there.

The raid will be more than 1/2 full with pics and music. If I decide to rip the DVD collection I'm going to need to get a much larger case, and a few more HDD.

I'm not going to use the WHS, at least not on that box. I might set up a different box for it, but when those disks do come, they will sit on the shelf. :(

I'm planning on taking out the 8800GS and putting in a 9800GX2 in the next couple weeks. From what Xil said WHS would not even know what to do with itself with all of that plugged in. We will see if XP can handle it with a E2140 feeding the cards. I am 1/2 expecting to have to get a more powerful proc or get vista on the box.

 
Look at the hardware pr0n over at the storage sub-forum. They are doing amazing things. Gonna grab one of the Norco 4020's next month and stick all my spare drives in it. The WHS drive extender thingie seems to be "da bomb". Basically a software JBOD with "shadow copy" of important files.

If you just want a simple, easy raid go with the Vantec 2 drive external case. JBOD (what I'm gonna use), raid 0 and raid 1. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392024

I have been plenty happy with my E2180 running 2x 88gt's on Vista, but from what others are saying it would have run fine with XP.

Dunno, I'm not even betting on it since WHS primary goal is to be a server and most consumer WHS boxes doesn't even have video cards. There is no point developing drivers for them when the generic Windows driver works. The kicker is that NVIDIA have the Windows 2003 Server x64 driver, but WHS is x86 :(

For me, it's not a biggie since with my Q6600 box, it's stillfolding for close to 5000 ppd (or over with A2) while doing multi purposes : computers backup, internet routing and firewalling, media storage and more. After I'm done doing the musical chair a bit, 2 of the dedicated folding boxens will have 2 GPU each so beside my main PC, there is no more free slots. I don't want to run a 8800GS alongside my GTX 260 due to the slowdown reports.

 
Hey brother Xilikon, welcome to the human race :D. Until you get your "walking on water" and "turnin' staffs into snakes" perfected I guess you'll just have to make an occasional mistake once in a while. :eek:

I appreciate you being honest enough to admit you didn't know everything and I apprciate you getting me offa' my lazy butt and looking into the WHS OS. ;)

I considered it but I cannot justify payer over 200$ so the P5K/EPU will have to do ;)

Ah, you youth of today......believe it or not CPU adaptors used to be a hot item as well as the next step up CPU with adaptors etc.;):p

I should have a K6>k5 adapter around here, somewhere...CRASH goes the pile of historical sentiment. Or is it the Cyrix upgrade CPU package I'm thinking of...
 
Allow me to step up and take my abuse for failing to observe the differnce of trying to adjust Shaders 2d vs. 3d. Had to publicly announce my incompetence in the forums before I realized what I was doing wrong....

k6 and k5 would have been the same socket, sooo, it must be the Cyrix (didn't pay them much attention back then).

I remember the overdrive chip my dad used in the 486 to get it up to 66 mhz :D

I had a Pentium 60 Packard Bell through half a year of HS and 4 years of college and then upgraded to a PowerLeap PL-54C/MMX with Pentium 233 MMX adapter my senior year. :p I had to con Intel support into giving me an interposer from the Overdrive series to get it to work. That lasted me another year if you can believe it. I used a Packard Bell for 5+ years. How's that for embarrassment?

If we're into history, how about swapping 68010 into 68000's or overclocking the 8mhz 68000's up to an outrageous 12mhz? Damn I miss that Amiga 1000.
 
Wish me good luck, I'm currently working to swap the server and the folding box (I hope that with both motherboards having the same P35 chipset and ICH9, it would be a matter of plug and pray). If the swap works great, the next time is to finish the build with 2x8800GS. When I will receive the new motherboard, I'll finish the other box with 2x8800GT.

We used to have a saying in college back in the early 90s......."Friends don't let friends buy PB". Thanks for sharing your story, it reminded me of my old roomate and his PB.
 
Finally some good news : I swapped the boxens so my folding box with a IP35-E become the file server (I moved the nics, PCI video card and 2 hdd). It took 2 hours to reconfigure everything since the PCI ID got shuffled and VMWare lost the specific configuration but in the end, it's chugging merrily.

Since my HTPC box have a Seasonic 500W PSU with 2 PCI-E connectors and I have a Earthwatts 430W on hands with just 1 PCI-E, I'll swap them now then finish to rebuild the 2x8800GS box. For the other, I'll wait for the motherboard to get here monday or tuesday to finish rebuilding my farm.
