A decision on processors...

I'm going to be building a new computer in the near-future. I'm holding out on a new video card until the r600's launch, but until then I still want to upgrade my mobo/processor/ram/PSU/case. I'm wanting to keep my spending restricted to about $800. I'll be doing a lot of 3d work, so a dual core is a must. Any recommendations? I'll be sticking to air-cooling for the processor, but I do want something with some solid overclocking ability, and the PSU will have to be ready for either an r600 or an 8800.

Here's what I'm thinking so far:

Thermaltake Armor Series VA8000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case - $124.99 after MIR

GeIL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - $174.99 after Instant Rebate and Promo

APEVIA ATX-AS680W-BL ATX12V / EPS12V 680W Power Supply 115/230 V CB IEC 950/ TUV EN 60950/ UL 1950/ CSA 950 - $84.99 After Instant and MIR

As for a mobo/processor...I'm really stuck on whom to choose. AMD has made some huge price cuts, but everything I've read says Intel's C2D is golden.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Don't buy that psu. It's a polished up turd. You're wasting money if you buy it.

At that price, try the Sunbeam NUUO 550w, Corsair HX 520, Seasonic S12-EP 550, or one of the better reviewed psu's at www.jonnyguru.com.

I agree with Bbq on the PSU.

As for the mobo/cpu, go for an E6600 and a DS3. If you need firewire, go for the DS3P (if you can find it). Other good board options are the P5B-E or the P5N-E SLI. If that CPU puts you over budget, you can either wait until after the april 22nd price cuts, or drop down to the E6400, which should OC to 3.2Ghz quite easily with a scythe ninja or other good cooler (tuniq tower, 9500/9700, ultra120, infinity, etc).

Just reiterating what enginurd said. Go with a better PSU and get a e6400 and ds3 and oc.

I just built a system with that case. Its HUGE! Weighs somewhere in the ballpark of 42 pounds empty. I have a P5W DH Deluxe in it. Only real issue Im having with it is the 120mm fans only spin at 1800RPM max. Other than that, its a pretty sharp case.

Awesome, thanks guys. :) So the price cuts are coming on April 22nd? Gah, thats right in the grey zone. Not quick enough, but not too long either. ><

I think I'll wait. I'm waiting for the r600 series anyway. :)

Thanks again!
