Ok, my current rig is old...and by old, I mean my CPU is an AMD 1.3Thunderbird...ouch.

It's time to upgrade.

I want a sff case (which will be a huge change) since my last box sits as high as my desk.

Anyhow, I'm thinking about gettings the following.
ATHLON 64 (3200+) SOCKET 939 (64 BIT) ..........................$281.95
Shuttle (SN95G5 Black) nForce3 Ultra Socket 939 1000MHz HTT........$414.95
High Quality PC-3200 DDR (400MHZ) 512MB.............$82.95
WD 120GB (8MB) (SATA) .................$115.95

I don't overclock, and I don't game that much. Everything I play my current box can actually handle HL2:CSS is probably the most punishing on it, but it runs it. And in the meantime, I was just going to toss my FX5200 in (I'm assuming it's better than the onboard video)

Any suggestions, as price IS a concern.
 
whats the most in CDN you can spend? Lets start with that.

Off the top of my head, i would say ditch the 5200, yuck. Ide rather you go with a socket 754 setup and get a 6600gt agp.

that shuttle will run you like 330$USD, when you can get a Mobo + Antec Aria for less than 200$, and get better upgradeability.
 
I use exactly same Shuttle and it rocks. 939 mobo supports dual DDR channel hence use two sticks and forget 754 setup (single channel DDR)
I've took 3000+ Winchester and it rocks. Stock it's fast enough and it oveclocks good. I gett 550 MHz extra out of it.

Well I'm trying to keep it under a grand. I had money and bought a new PC every 6-12 months...then I bought a house ... I have to find out which room has the money sucking vents.

Anyhow, I've altered what I was thinking about getting.

I bumped the CPU down to a 3000+ and the memory up to
Corsair
(PC3200) 512MB DUAL CHANNEL MEMORY

That'll be just over $900cad

I still plan to get a better video card...eventually, but the 5200 will have to suffice in the interim.

Mabye you can check this out. im always looking for good stuff for cheap. so here is what i pulled from newegg. not sure if they ship CAD but heres just something i threw up real quick. Prices are all usd and include shipping.

Aria 115

Hitachi 80gb 8m cache sata x2 118 Run in RAID.

PDP pc 3200 1 gig low latency kit 178. This ram rocks, and for the price you cant find anything that runs low latency. Had mine for almost a year now and im never over paying for ram again ;p

ASUS mobo 81 Has good on board sound.

AMD 3000+ 754 RTL 146

So thats what 638 usd after shipping. Donno what that is in CAD but yea, those are all very good/quality products.
Remember, the best stuff isnt always the expensive stuff :p
 
The best prices in Canada are probably at www.ncix.com. They have weekly sales in which you can find the odd bargain and they pricematch everything which is an added bonus. I know this week you can get a 3000+ (939) for under $200 through the sale, so that should allow you to save some money for a better video card (which you desperately need :) ) I wouldn't bother with RAID as a 120GB drive should be fine for your needs.
 
4 us canucks, always use ncix as a measure of prices. they will price match most of the time

but I was going to add, they have the a64 3000 for $187 right now till the first. then they have ocz 3200 ram 2.3.3.6 for $58/each. I am putting a game rig 2gether 4 a buddy and he's getting that soltek 939 board for only 117$ (add $10 for halflife 2 bronze account too). not bad at all I must say for a gr8 a64 rig.

I have a sn95 with a 6800gt and it will only make ya go goo goo but get a better vid card if you can.
 
PRICE BEING A CONCERN,

the 95 is a good choice, I'm personally waiting for the SN25- but that's more expensive all around.

Couple things:

Seagate for HD- WD's don't like suffocation,, they get hot, most especially the smaller ones (that don't use FDB motors).

For your ram- get ONE 512 stick. I know you'd be missing your dual channel, but you only get two slots with SFF's, and with one 512 stick you have the ability to add another 512 later- and you'll need if you plan on gaming at all in the future. RAM is scattershot, just make sure whatever you buy can run CAS 2.0 and a command rate of 1T, these being the most important timings to AMD's on die controller.

Interesting, as for shipping, I relatives in the US I ship to when I buy from the US, then I just drive down to pick it up, as the added costs to ship to Canada are ussually sickly (and they are literally two miles south of the border!) Apparently those two miles cost $100's of dollars ;)
