For anyone that is knowledgeable in this...I bought a Linksys WRT300N v.1.1 about 2 weeks ago.

1) What's the difference between the Linksys WRT300N and the 330N "Gigabit Gaming Router" other than the Gigabit ports?

also

2) The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router costs about 20$ less than my non-Gigabit Linksys WRT300N....and seems to have a couple more features. Should I return my Linksys and get the D-Link? I have two laptops in my house (they both use like Intel wireless that came with the laptop so brand-to-brand interference shouldn't be a problem)

I think there could be big differences between the 300N and the 330N because of the internal chipsets. IMvhO the 330N is a "me too" product that's copying D-Link's previous success with its "gaming" router series. The DIR-655 is the next gen of that series, although it doesn't play the gaming marketing card as much as they did with the DGL series.

Here's a detailed review of the DIR-655.

What is a "me too" product?

me-too product

Product that follows other similar successful products into a market rather than setting a trend. Me-too products avoid risks and research and development costs by emulating other products that are successful in a market. They also confuse markets by reducing both product differentiation and the impact of strong brands.

What I meant was that D-Link did the innovation with their "Gamer Lounge" series of routers some time ago, which were very successful, and Linksys copied that to some degree with their own "Gaming Router" later on, thereby demonstrating some lack of originality and innovation.

Hawking was on the market before DLink...actually Ubicom was the developer of the streaming engine that they both use.

I don't see any "Gaming Router" marketing from Hawking. Can you substantiate this claim that Hawking was first?

Yes, Ubicom deserves the bulk of the credit, but as for products consumers buy, I see D-Link bringing the first "gaming" branded router to the market, being successful, and Linksys following much later.

Here's a press release from Ubicom:

Ubicom's StreamEngine Technology Selected by D-Link for the Industry's First Gaming Routers

Hawking's "Broadband Booster" was an apparent innovation, and was perhaps copied by D-Link in a "me too" product as well, but from what I've seen, neither have been big successes.
