Ok the story is, I RMA'd my trusty 9800 pro, cos it wasn't so trusty :) anyway they don't have direct replacement in stock so i have choice of cards, for around the same price, the choices are..

Powercolor 9800 pro 128mb or
MSI 5900XT 128mb

Since i've had the 9800pro and was happy with it, i am wondering if getting the XT would be a good idea. Does it perform better than the PRO?

Thanks

Hey Nate,

I have found a neat website that might help, it tests these cards on multiple benchmarks, and I am actually in the market to buy a new video card myself, so check it out and reply to what you think would benefit you the best.

Going by that series of benches, i'm gonna stick with the 9800pro. i think.

Here is a link on the 5900XT, its basically a cut version of a real 5900, which the 9800 pro beat anyway.

Pity, i was thinking i was gonna get a killer card for nothing :) Damn those marketing guys, i can't keep up with all these names. PRO XT SE GT XE PE i mean FFS, it a minefield

9800 is a better card you may even be able to find a 6800nu for the same price or close ^^

The 9800 Pro is decisively better than the 5900 XT, which only achieved parity with the older 9700 Pro. In fact, you could argue that nVidia *never* made a product that could compete with the 9800 Pro at the same price point. The 5900 Ultra was always more scarce and more expensive than the 9800 Pro, yet at best equaled and was often slower than the 9800 Pro. The 5950 Ultra was marginally faster but up to twice as expensive. The 5800 Ultra was a quickly withdrawn flop that, apparently, sounded like a lawnmower. The 6600 GT looks to be the first nVidia product that is decisively better than the 9800 Pro at the same price point, but it is also vaporware at this point, so by the time it comes out it will probably cost $50 more than a 9800 Pro for a modest gain in speed.

Nice find sintax. That site is both informative and fun.

DEAR GOD NO

Whatever you do people, STOP using Tomshardware for graphics benchmarks. He loves to skew the numbers in favor of whatever card he likes, even going as far as comparing results in an "apples-to-apples" method when one card was running AA and the other was not.

Please, search elsewhere. Find an unbiased source and compare results with other sources.

Now, this time he does happen to be right. The 9800 Pro is a good deal better than the 5900XT, so I'd stick with that.

the 9800 Pro is a better and more expensive card. get it.

9800 Pro's go for $200

5900XT's go for about $175

Dont let me "give" you a cheaper card as a replacement.

You might want to ask them if you could upgrade to a 6800 for some extra money. Since they arent doing an exact trade anyway, they would probably be glad to do it. I'd easily pay $100 to get upgraded if they would let you.

And who knows they might even do it for like $80. Or up to $120, though thats the max I would pay.

I had been thinking just that hmmmm a 6800.....
So Basically they have Feck all in stock, but here are the options

Gainward GeForce 6800 128MB DDR 2.8ns AGP, "Ultra/2100 Golden Sample", Retail

For €350 or

MSI GeForce 6800 128MB DDR AGP, NX6800-TD128, DVI/TV-Out, Retail

For €320.

Edit:- there is also a Gainward 6800LE for €265

Now i know that the Gainward 6800 vanilla runs a 350core / 800 mem by default, compared to 325/700 for the MSI.

But the prices seem kinda high, would cost me an extra €150 for the gainward 6800 vanilla..... worth it?

and just for a laugh see this one.............
Gainward GeForce 6800Ultra 256MB DDR3 AGP, "CoolFX Ultra/2600 GS" 450Plus mhz at an unbeatable price of.......................€910!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, i mean come on thats just silly.
