Like many of you, there is no way in "H" that I'm gonna pay $300(retail) for an O/S. I waited for 98SE to hit $85(sub $100) before I bought it. So I did some looking around, and apparently some vendors still have XP-SP1(retail) on their shelves for around $180-ish. I don't know if I can put the url in here, but if you ask, I'l msg you with it. And if I can, then I'll post it.
 
I've seen XP SP2 OEM at Newegg and other places for between $135 and $140. I've seen it for even less at computer shows.

In fact, Newegg has XP Home SP2 for $91.95 right now.
 
I'd *seriously* stay away from OEM licenses now that WGA is implemented if you ever want to move the OS to another PC.

They have the *ability* to check for this now, if they crack down on it or not remains to be seen.

All they do is check KEYS with WGA btw, not if it's a different computer. Also all they do is make sure you aren't running a Corporate Key that was not generated by MS themselves.

Sadly, I wish that was correct.

MS WGA FAQ:

Q: What information is collected from my computer?

A: The genuine validation process will collect information about your system, such as Windows product key, PC manufacturer, and operating system version, to determine if Windows is genuine. This process does not collect or send any information that can be used to identify you or contact you. The complete list of information collected in the validation process is shown below:

OEM product key
PC Manufacturer
OS version
PID/SID
BIOS info (make, version, date)
BIOS MD5 Checksum
User Locale (language setting for displaying Windows)
System Local (language version of the operating system)

The system is not limited to keys MS did not generate. In the past certain Corp keys generated by MS were used with pirated copies and thus MS had to blacklist a key they themselves generated.
