Brothers and Sisters of the hardforums community,

I need your help. I went out for the evening, only to find, upon my return a note from my parental figure.

"I think this monitor blew - all of a sudden a bright line appeared in the middle of the screen then a serious electrical (ozone smell) the line fluttered, turned from brilliant white to colours."

I am wondering if anything other than the monitor could be at fault and also what is the appropriate action to be taken for safety sake. Also wondering about diagnosing what happened, if something other than the monitor is at fault.

That monitor is fried! Seriously, it could have been anything. Power surge, faulty CRT, etc. The one thing I would not do is crack it open to futz with it. Unless you know what you are doing there are some serious amps lurking in there....Most likely there is nothing you can do anyway.
 
If you do decide to void the warranty and crack it open, leave it unplugged for a week or so first.
 
Would you guys go with an LCD or CRT and why? Personally I would say a CRT just because of cost. Any advice would be muchly appreciated.
 
I vote for the LCD...CRT's are still great in games, but LCD is catching up...Plus your room stays cool and you will notice a drop in your electric bill (well at least I did, from 5crt's to 5 lcd's....). Plus saves ALOT of space, ALOT......PQ is great... Plus CRT's are still fairly expensive(the good ones).
