A buncha HD DVD for $4.75

ummm... duh

Actually, that is a very big misconception. Most people just assume that repair shops charge way too much. Heck, half of the time the units only suffer from bad caps.

They assume that they charge too much because the cost of LABOR is going to be more than what the player is worth, doesn't matter what needs fixing.

I don't know if you live in happy magic land, but unless you are friends with the tech you will get assraped.

The only good thing that HD-DVD players are good for is extracting the blue laser diodes.

Unless, of course you happen to actually HAVE a player and a collection of movies, then this thread is a nice bit of info. Thanks OP for the post, despite the detractors in the thread, it did help some of us out!

HD DVD is still a great, cheap way to have 1080p movies. I have both HD and BR players and I have FAR more HD DVD's because they're significantly cheaper. I bought some BR's during the format war, but since it ended, prices have been steadily rising on them. It's not like with the old days where the players aren't available. If anything BR and BR/HD combo drives have been dropping in price. It really makes little difference long-term which format it is since there'll be support for them for a long time through standard players and drives.

People need to get over their weird ego attachment to their possessions and come to terms with the fact that movies are movies. If the quality is the same it hardly matters whether it's BR or HD.

My first order should be arriving today and I just put another $29 worth in...

For those of use who got the LG dual format drives these cheap HDDVDs are awesome. Just rip it with AnyDVD HD and add to the collection.

Or just find them on the 'net. j/k :p

This isn't a bad deal at all. It's on par with good DVD deal ($4-5 range).

But, that's right.... big corporation doesn't make any money when you repair stuff, so they'll continue to offer cheap Chinese products that will also break after a year, to be replaced by yet another cheap Chinese product that will break in a year....

(sorry for going off-topic)

yeah, please bring back the multi thousand dollar basic VCR. Or maybe we should unionize and build them in America, thats doing awesome for car companies.

Whenever someone talks about "how much better" older products were they almost always compare some top of the line, super expensive (esp if adjusted for inflation) to a bargain basement device today. A lot of older stuff (tube amps anyone) were much less reliable then things used today (like solid state).

The few repair shops I've been in have been pretty ghetto places, and a lot won't even repair certain products (like TV's) because they know when they tell someone the bill they will just never come pick it up.

The one place I could see improvement would be if their were less proprietary parts since proprietary circuit boards, lamps, etc is a lot of the repair costs.

The truth of the matter is that most devices have become too complicated to fix cheap, even the repair shops will only "repair" by getting in a replacement board. Something digital is often not as easy to fix as an analog device. Even "just replacing caps" is a LOT harder with the decreased size in boards, boards with a lot of layers, and newer soldering techniques like surface mount and lead free.

If someone really cared they could get an extended warranty, but research shows that in almost all cases they arn't worth it since things are pretty reliable.

let me guess... you've had a bad experience with a local repair shop :p

No I actually like the one in my hometown quite a bit but I don't think I ever used them more then once for repair. I would always go their because he would have random NES and SNES games.

The one in my current said he wouldn't do repair on a arcade monitor, even a cap kit, because it wasn't a TV, which makes no sense at all since he did computer monitors too and a Arcade monitor is just like a TV or Computer monitor with no case and a certain resolution(s). So I guess you could call that a bad experience but nothing I'm really bitter about.

I DO get bitter about people whining about the "good old days" all the time. For some stuff I can understand, I bought 3 24in CRT's and I have a 37in CRT and 29in CRT monitor, even though I had 3 24in LCD's with decent panels. But I understand thats the way things go and if Flat Panels weren't out I probably wouldn't have been able to afford the CRT's.

Those 24 inch sony monitors had at least an MSRP of 2499.99 and the 37 CRT had an MSRP over 9999.99, if you were lucky enough to be able to find one in "the good old days" and you would probably had to have gotten it at a dealer that you will be paying close to MSRP.

So its silly for someone to say that a $2,500 24inch CRT is better than some 150 dollar 22 LCD(remeber LCD's have more visible so this is fair) and come to the conclusion that things were better in the good old days. These people are rarely ready with cash in hand to buy an over $9,999 for a 37" LCD today so I don't think the :"good old days" would be very good for them.

These are an even better deal than any of that stuff though since the performance is almost the same as BluRay (and more people have 360's or computers than PS3's). They also don't weight over 200 pounds like a CRT does...

Sorry to waste so much space I feel like a jerk now.

This is a smoking [H]ot deal for those that were early supporters of HD DVD and paid $1,000+ for it and now need to justify their purchase!

Lame.

It's hot for those of us that snatched up a couple of super-cheap HD players during the Xmas format war.

i 2nd this:)

i've used the HDDVD player a lot, but for standard DVDs... I think the 4 or 5 HD movs that came w/the player are still in packaging :p guess that's the deciding factor for me on this deal ! *PS* it's not hooked up to a hi-def Tv, which would prbly change things a little

Damn. Thirteen movies for $93. Actually fifteen (Mission Impossible Trilogy) for $93. Only $6.20 average! Couple this with Newegg's $95 shipped deal on a combo HD DVD/Blu-ray internal optical drive. Pretty tempting.

What's the hands-down best way to rip optical media? I have tons of DVDs I wanna store digitally for a future HTPC. I have movies and Futurama seasons that I'd like to rip into episodes with no extra content. Everything I try somehow messes up, doesn't play right, or takes way too long.

futurama woohooo! still need to see the new mov Into the Wild GreenYonder :)
DVD Decrypter is a very capable program that works well & is largely automated - but has options for almost anything you can imagine if you really want to mess w/them.

I've also heard good things for AnyDVD, which also has an HD option, I believe.

DVD Decrypter doesn't work very well for newer DVDs. And not at all for HD DVD.

good point beowulf on DVD Decrypter not doing HiDef, didn't think of that (i'm behind on HD video ;) )
my experiences with it & newer DVDs have been pretty good tho, FWIW off the top of my head the only one it was unable to do was Bond-Casino Royale. that one didn't even play 100% correctly in flawless condition (tried multiple copies/returns)

For SD movies I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. Cyberlink and MCE both recognize the files for easy playback.

For HD movies, I've been using AnyDVD HD with ImgBurn to create playable ISO's.
It works really well and is super easy for the family to play movies... just double-click the title.

Trouble is, storing HD movies fills a HDD very quickly. My HTPC case only mounts one HDD, so that's an issue. So, any movies that I can get cheap in HD-DVD (and delete from the HDD) is good for me!
Well, that is until I build a media server that can hold several TeraByte and stream the movies to HTPC.

I have plenty of space for now. Two WD10EADS and a storage WD6400AAKS. i want to eliminate having to load discs. Basically discs are for archival/backup purposes.

So I can use these programs to rip into uncompressed formats?

Yeah, I prefer to keep my discs stored. Less chance of the kids ruining them. :p

Yes, those programs are what I currently use. They create full backups, uncompressed. Actually uncompressed is the only option for HD (that I know of).

For HD, you have to rip the DVD first with AnyDVD, then convert it to an .iso file with ImgBurn. I found a full tutorial on the process... either here or on Slysoft's website... I can't remember which.

I also use Slysoft's Virtual Clone Drive. That is what enables playing the movie by merely double-clicking the file. It simulates a DVD being inserted into a drive, so PowerDVD will autostart and play the movie.

The only thing that stinks is that I have yet to find a way to play the HD .iso movies in Media Center. Still one more reason why I like all the cheap HD-DVD's. lol

I guess that VLC media player can't play HD DVD format (.iso file)?

All I know is that EVERY HD-DVD in my wish list jumped from $3.49 to $12.99 and higher (up to $25.00) !! wtf??

What are they thinking?? So many buyers flocked to scoop up $4.00 movies, that must mean that they're in demand... and therefore we better start getting full retail??

Somebody smack these idiots.

<EDIT>
OK, I'm confused. 90% of the movies in my wish list are fulfilled by TraderBora. In my cart they are all $12.99 and up... but in TraderBora's store many of them are listed at $1.99 to $5.49??

Well they either removed some titles or made them all FBA with different product codes or something. If I move saved titles to my cart I get an error that it's no longer available.

So you're supposed to send Amazon all your junk to sell? They must have some absolutely monstrous warehouses.

Have used this deal 2x since it was first posted here. Got 14 titles for Less than $55.

It's back with Amazon fulfillment. Many titles are now $3.49. Others $4-8. Some much higher.

The HDDVDs are even cheaper then the regular DVDs, lol.

Been buying like crazy. Amassed a nice collection for under $50.
