A bad day to build a computer

I put together my first computer today. Barton Athlon Xp 2600, asus a7n8x-e deluxe, 1 gig crucial memory, had an old 5200 vid card, 80gig hdd, cd-rw, floppy, thermaltake 420w psu and an Antec Super Lanboy case. Not long after I began, I found my cpu wouldn't fit into the mobo. I called AMD and they kept trying to insist that I didn't install it right or some bs, trying to get me to void my warranty or something, so they said to mail the Cpu to them so they could test it. Then I called ASUS and they said they'd call me back. got a call from them a few hours later, they said the board was dead. I go to Fry's and pick me up a Abit NF-7s, and the shoe fits. So I put everything together, followed wiring and stuff real closely, plug in, power on, hit the power, and everything starts going, but immediately dies 3 seconds later. I checked all my cables and stuff they are all secure. The Antec super lanboy case didn't come with System Speaker wires, so there are 4 pins on the mobo naked, i'm suspecting this could be the problem(no beeping), or maybe..that the CPU is dead or something. I was having trouble getting AMD's heatsink to latch on securely to the mobo..their directions were shoddy...didn't mention anything about getting it fastened on both sides...I could only get one side fastened. Was using some force to attempt to get both sides to lock on. The purple CPU core appears to be ok..if anyone can help me out it'd be greatly appreciated.
 
Paragraphs are your friends. Seriously, that's pretty hard to read. Back in a few with useful comments after I do some research on that mobo/chip combo.
 
hmmm..... Did you put inserts under your motherboard so that you are not having grounding problems?
 
Maybe its your ram... put ram in different slots etc... replace ram if you can...

The clip needs to be securely on both sides. Usually, one side goes on first, and then the other side of the clip is brought down and latched into place. Sometimes getting a heatsink on is difficult.... very difficult. And sometimes removing it is an even bigger bitch than getting it on.
 
I managed to get the heatsink on there. Tried switching the memory sticks. The board is attached to the chassis with brass mounting brackets and screws, except the screws also have a space so the heads are not touching the board. Is a system speaker cable supposed to be there in order to work or anything, cause the case didn't come with one? Everything lights up, but dies 2 seconds later..maybe the CPU or mobo is dead?

no - speaker doesn't have to be connected for the system to boot... I suggest taking everything out and trying to boot outside the case with minimum hardware needed...

do what this guy said. It may be a PITA, but it will eliminate grounding problems. Boot with the CPU (with HSF installed!), 1 stick of ram, and video...nothing else. If you get a post screen and it tries to find the drives, power down and add your drives one at a time booting between each one. Do this to all your hardware to eliminate if one thing is causing it.
 
is the cpu seated correctly? is the little gold arrow in the correct corner

either a ground short, where dismounting the mobo will solve it as mentioned

or a thermal cutout, where the Heatsink Fan fan is incorrectly attached to the mobo (monitoring header)
or the CPU is switching it off (internal diode) because the heatsink is incorrectly mounted also mentioned

redo both

outside chance of a crappy power supply

I build by starting with just the CPU, Heatsinkw\Fan and a speaker in the box, and go for a beep (actually it will beep like mad without the RAM or Vidcard)

then I add a single stick of RAM, Vidcard, mouse and keyboard and go for a single beep (typical) and access the BIOS

the I mount the mobo and repeat
then I add addition RAM and a FDD and run memtest
then I add additional cards and drives
 
Could also be that your power supply is bad. A similar thing happened to my friend a few weeks ago, where his PC would go on for like 2 seconds and then shut off. Turns out it was the PS.
