A ~6L brickless LAN/Gaming/LRPC case concept.

At least on LGA2011, the top of the CPU is 8mm above the surface of the motherboard PCB.

1150 is possibly a bit less but that gives you an idea.

Ok, so 50mm maximum height isn't too bad of an estimate. Also, I would like to change the title of this post, as the case is not even close to 6L anymore. How do I do that?

I'll do that once the design is fixed.

I've been playing around with the accent mounting a lot, and I have two ideas:

1. Screws and Belleville springs

I guess you can all see how this is supposed to work out. The top screw pulls the accent to the top panel, so both are flush, the front screw is just holding the panel in place, while the Belleville springs press it against the front panel. The hole in the accent is larger than it needs to be, so when pressing one side of the accent, the screw gives enough room for the panel to actually move.

2. Foam tape

The foam tape is 1mm thicker than it needs to be, the bottom is supported by a folded flange in the front mount, so the accent is pressed the top and front panel. The screw is still there so the accent won't just fall out when you remove the front panel.
There are holes in the foam tape for the LEDs and the power button.

I'm not sure how this will work out for the bottom accent. If I move the drive back a few mms to allow for the foam, how will the accent reach the eject button? If I leave out the foam there, will it still sit snuggly?

What are your thoughts?

I'd go for the foam tape, but use an adhesive tape so you avoid screws altogether.
The ubiquitous 3M VHB is durable enough for mounting building fascias, so it should hold fine mechanically for a case front. It also avoid a bunch of extra holes (some countersunk) and a complicated set of fasteners and washers.
The downside is that it makes the accent permanently mounted to the case front (or to the inside of the case front panel). If the intend was to make the accent replaceable, this may be an issue (VHB isn't too hard to remove and replace, but it;s much more of a pain than screws).

I thought about using double sided adhesive tape, but the idea was that you could turn the bottom accent upside down so the slot for the ODD wouldn't be there when you weren't using it.
You might be right about the screws, it's probably easier for the user to make the mount screwless, but with the foam there's only one screw and one nut per accent, I believe that would be bearable, no?
