a $60,000 HP server?

Xp 64-bit edition? Isn't that the version everyone says runs really crappy?


As for the price, did you see the Enron auction? Literally HUNDREDS of 50" plasma displays....when you're throwing around that much money, an extra $60,000 doesn't seem like much.


I got it up to $82,825, bet they thought I was going to be customer of the month:D
Some of it is pretty ridiculous though, I mean, no RAID? only u160, no u320? No dual channel controllers? $194 to upgrade a DVDROM to a DVD/CDRW combo drive? I don't care if it's low-profile, that's a ripoff:rolleyes:

The Itanium 2 runs XP and Windows 2003 Server just fine in 64-bit mode. It's a purely 64-bit design, unrelated to the AMD64/IA-32e scheme, and development for Windows has been done for about a year.

RAID isn't for everyone. With a workstation setup, there's no one best RAID solution for the task. And with a single-drive setup, there's no way that even burst transfers would frequently exceed the 160 MB/s mark. Sustained transfers won't even cross the 70 MB/s mark--ever.

ah, gotcha about XP.

I thought it was a server...mislead by the thread title...that's why I was wondering about RAID. Goes to show what you get when you don't read carefully;)
 
I never realized how much some of that hardware costs.
I was browsing Suns site and some of thier servers start at $1 million+
 
I mentioned something like this a while ago, only the price to hardware ratio was way more rediculous. I got flamed, however, coz I didn't realise that the additional $50,000 markup was for the support, and apparently was well worth the money.
 
I think I would rather have a viper or an M5.
Hell I bet I could buy a call center in India hehehe.
 
Well considering it has 24GB! of memory.

However I was about to add you should price out some Sun hardware.

The upper end stuff is pretty nice. You open them up and you find a Sun engineer sitting inside ;)

Really though that is the what you pay for with the Sun hardware is support. That and being able to replace CPUs or memory from the machine while it cranks away and does not even skip a beat. Try that with an Emachine!

Should see how much some of the software costs that runs on these machines.

Oracle starts at $35,000/year.
