Heard from numerous sources, all with very short write ups that the 990X is incoming around Q4 this year - anyone else heard so? There is an entry on the Wikipedia page as well, stating the same, with stock clocks going to be around 3.47.

I guess since SB chips will start off as quad core, the 9xxX chips will continue to reign over everything else? Also, if it was released, would this decrease the 980X price at all (both EE chips, both with base price of $999)?

More than likely the 980x would just cease to be produced and the 990x would take the 980s place in the $1k EE spot. Personally if you're intrested in these EE chips and have the money now I'd pick up the 980x now.
 
Retail places will still have a huge price tag on the 980 even if the 990 is released. Take the 975 for example. A lot of places still have it near the 1k mark with the 980x just a hair more for an all around better piece of hardware. If you're going to look for one at a cheaper price, you'll need to look at used items from people that are getting rid of it for whatever reason.
 
Same processor and higher clock speed and you are willing to wait longer and pay more for the same thing?
 
I don't think the 980X price will drop much for a year or so. EE chips are strange like that.

I don't get this... why not just make the base multiplier 27 and Turbo then 0/0/0/0/1/1 ?
What's the difference? Is there some sort of marketing advantage here? Isn't turbo just the same as speedstep...?

My only thought is that Intel guarantees only a peak of 26 multi and 3466.666 MHz under any certain load. So they can cover their ass for unforseen thermal situations, or binning. Basically, it's only a bonus if you get to see those 27 and 28 multipliers.

In other news, the i7-640M looks nice. Would make my lappy happy, 3.467 GHz, woot.

I see desktop users are getting stiffed as well by Intel with no option for 32nm quad cores. Fine, I'll stick with a dual as long as possible. :)

I love my 980x! It ocs like a dream and for the games that use multi-cores=====YOWZA!
 
Yeah, screw this, just ordered a 980x. Can't wait to see what overclocks I can get on my new water cooling setup!

Until the 980x, I never saw the value or felt the need to buy an extreme processor. For example, my last build was a Q9650 that I spent $329.00 on and was able to overclock it completely stable at 4ghz with a Corsair H50, so why would anybody have spent $1,000+ for the QX9650? They both had 12mb cache, so what was the big deal with the unlocked multiplier if you could hit relatively the same oc on water?

However, the 980x is different, its on a 32nm die and it has six cores! In contrast the 975, 960, 930, 920 are all on the old 45nm die, have only 8mb of cache and only four cores! Regardless of what they come out with, the 980x will be viable for the next two years, so why wait forever for the unknown?

Just started running it last night, and it's pretty goddamn amazing! Sure it had a hefty price tag, but now that I have it, I sure as hell won't let go! I'm noticing an enormous difference in 3D rendering over the i7 920 @ 3.6ghz that I just replaced. I kicked the voltage up and started running it at just over 4ghz and it's not breaking 50c even with my GPUs heating up my loop running furmark :eek:

Too bad I only had an hour to play with it last night. Work is going to be unbearable today :D

Congrats! It's actually nice to see Intel create some differentiation between EE and non-EE processors for once if for nothing else other than being told you wasted your money on an EE CPU.

Heck going from a QX9650 to just a 920 was a pretty big difference for me. And even going from the 920 to the 980x seemed to me to offer just a little bit of a kick, nothing scientific just my observation.
 
980x rocks. I fold with mine and it's awesome. Sure it cost a bunch, but you get what you pay for.
