99% Isopropyl

Alot of places require you to ask for 99% and it is kept behind the counter. For many reasons, namely because alot of bums try and drink the stuff, also I have heard it can be used to make alot of nasty/illegal things. Also lower percentages have oils in them which can actually make it harder to clean things. Only use 99%, dont waste your time with the other crap.

Use Everclear. Great for cleaning stuff.

Such a waste...

I get 99% in 5 gallon jugs for free from someone I know who works at a chemical supply place. :D

dellaxim has the right idea. find someone who works in a lab. if you are in Ithaca, NY, look for a friend who is a biologist or chemist at Cornell. Alcohols are cheap for labs, and they are used so much that the lab won't even notice if some is missing.

So how does everyone feel about using naptha? I use it. It seems like a good cleaning solvent for heatsink TIM or paste. While I buy it at home depot (paint dept), you can get it at most grocery stores as a spot remover called Thoro.

It realy depends on what you are cleaning, but there is probably a better solocent for what you are doing.

Pre painting - Laquer Thinner to get the last bit of paint off, you can even use it to chemicaly etch acrylics.

Pre painting - If you have primered allready go to an autobody shop and get some wax/silicone remover. this is great stuff, wont strip paint, but takes all the nasties off of it so the next coat will stick real good.

De greasing parts - Dont know what would get greasy in a computer, but use Gasoline, brake fluid, or laquer thinner, but these will strip finishes/paint off of things.

Realy what I am geting at is there is allways the right tool for the job.
