Hello, Im not quite sure where to post this but here it is. I am trying to find 99% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol for cleaning, but I have run into a problem, I cant find it anywhere. I can easily find 90%/70%, but no luck with 99%. I have tried K-Mart, Walmart, Target, local hardware shops, Sherwin Williams, local paint stores, Autozone, and Advanced Auto you name it I have looked. Where does everyone else find it? I know its a goofy question, but its kind of rediculous that I cant seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks for any Help :D

99% has just been recomended to me as the best cleaner  . 95% is a start, where did you find that?

and as I said before I know that this is a stupid ass question but I honestly cannot find anything over 90%, and I not only called all the stores that I listed but I stopped at the stores to see if the person answering the phones were idiots.

i dont remember where I saw it, sorry

The internet, its a endless array of crap, infromation and online stores.... :p Im sure you can find it somewhere online.

Don't know where you are at, but the Safeway by my house sells 95% isopropyl there. So if you have a Safeway by you, you could check there maybe. Not much, but its a start anyway...

I get mine at a hobby store near my house hobbymart he has almost every % i could want & he had a ton of colors for when i air brush my case's & i use the 99% to clean them before the clear coat i dont know if you tryed a hobby store but i find alot of stuff i needed in his place for other hobbys like model planes & that kind of stuff

you can quite often get 99% from drug stores - in Canada at least you will have to ask the pharmacists for it - they sell it over the counter but its usually not on display

I know you are new here and I'm not trying to bash but please try to put some periods in your post occassionally. Geeze, that made me imagine that your were on speed when you typed it.

I too have found it in hobby stores in concentrations over 90%. That would be the first place to check before searching online.

My guess is a drug store. If they don't have it then a hobby store. Though if 70% doesn't clean something then I'm not sure how much better 99% will do. If it is cheap though then you might as well.

If you can't find 99% isopropyl, try denatured alcohol. Available at most hardwares (and WalMart) in the paint section.

Exactly what I was going to say. It is in an orange and yellow tin canister. Stuff works great.

I tried a couple of drug stores ( I cant believe I didnt think of them) CVS, Rite Aid, the pharmacy at K-Mart, the pharmacy at 2 local grocery stores (Wegmans/Tops). No luck yet :( . I didnt try Eckerds yet, gonna try tommorow, also gonna check out Home Depot for "denatured alcohol". Thanks for the help it is very much appreciated, I have been looking for this stuff for a while :D

errr sorry i'm a noob....why is the % important? What do you clean with it?

A druggist can order it for you. I play records, not CDs, so cleaning them is a big deal. That's why I know about the stuff. It's called Regency Grade, and it runs $28 a gallon, so be ready to pay. I got mine for less, but only because the druggist is a friend.

I've heard nail polish remover (acetone) can be used as a replacement to isopropyl. True or no?

No, unfortunatly you cant solely us the figernail polish remover, you can use it as a first step in the cleaning processes but it will leave a film, wether you can see it or not a film is there so you still have to use Isopropyl afterwards. Isopropyl will not leave any resedue in higher concentraions, thats why I want to get as high of a content as possible (higher content less of a chance of film(better cleaning/contact)). I have heard that you can cut the 99% with distilled water, is there any truth to that?

Still on the search for 99% Isopropyl, Thanks for all the help. :D

Thanks, too. Now I can drink my nail polish remover again, instead of saving it for cleaning my cpu...

the isopropyl alcohol in the bottle is a good solvent, so basically the higher the % of isopropyl alcohol in the bottle (the remaining % being water as said before) the stronger the whole solution will be, and the more effective it will be at dissolving and cleaning off whatever this guy is trying to clean off.

Also, I work at Longs, and I have seen it on the back shelves although I can't recall seeing it in the main store displays, I will investigate further.

Acetone is a much stronger/effective cleaner than isopropyl alcohol. Nailpolish remover has fragrances, dyes, and moisturizers which can leave this "film" that you are talking about; however, acetone will clean better than isopropyl alcohol any day.

95% alcohol isn't hard to find...look for a bottle labelled "Gem Clear" or "Everclear" :)

EDIT: I'll try to be useful. I found either 99 or 100% isopropyl at Meijer, so if you have those wherever you're from try there. I don't see why it would matter compared to 90% alcohol though, as long as you don't buy the dyed or scented stuff.

Now if I can just find pure acetone....

theres some reason youre not supposed to use acetone...i think it eats the soul of your processor. im not sure.

the fragrances etc. in nail polish remover are probably why you aren't supposed to use it (either that, or the acetone is what killed my cpu... that would suck)

i have some 100% acetone nail polish remover i use now (instead of regular acetone-based nail polish remover that has other crap in it) and it cleans stuff real good. i think it only costs $2 too.

I can do that without acetone. But the pins get stuck in my throat....

Chemically it's really hard to get past the 95% by volume. By distilling, one can get up-to 95% but past that one has to use special chemicals to extract the water further since 95% is the max distilling method will produce. Even with the chemical water removal method I think you can achieve only 99% by volume.

So I would think that it would be expensive to get anything over 95% by volume.

An alterantive depending on what you are cleaning is white spirit. It is petol without all the detergents and stuff added. It is perfect for removing grease, sticker residue and many types of gunge without leaving any residue or removing acrylic paint. Unlike petrol it doesn't eat plastic even when left soaking overnight. It's also far cheaper than iospropyl. We used it for cleaning lenses on telescopes and high precision optics as well as degreasing precision mechanical bearings. They sell it at camping stores as cooker fuel or it can be bought as a degreaser from chemical supply companies.

When I was in school I had a class called Human Grotesque and we had to read alot of books, one of the authors (can't remember who though) would have a single sentence run for a few paragraphs. The longest, I believe, was almost two pages before hitting a period (or any punctuation).
