Can someone tell me the next best step up from a ATI 9800XT card? I am just talking about the next level of performance w/o buying a 6800 Ultra.

Thanks for any info.
 
So you think I will see a nice difference from going to the 6800 plain jane from my ATI 9800XT?

Yep. I noticed a huge difference between my old overclocked 9800pro (450/375 IIRC)(256bit/128mb) and a BFG 6800.
 
a 6600 GT will beat a 9800 pro... so yea... a 6800 nu should smoke the 9800 pro all over the place.
 
I wouldn't pay an extra ~300 for a 6800 over a 9800xt.

get a 6800gt if you must, but nothing less is worth it.

TRUE! you will get small gains in almost everything with a 6600gt or 6800NU so don't settle for less than a 6800GT
 
Just save your money until the next generation of cards come along. The 9800XT is more than enough for today's games. It's really not worth the upgrade unless you find a fantastic deal.
 
but the "next generation" of cards will not be nearly as large a step up as the 6800 and x800 series was. The next line of cards coming out will probably only see performance gains of 15-30%, as opposed to the last generation upgrade which was more like 100%.

which accordingly would equate to a 115-130% gain as opposed to 100%. but that is the nasty paradox which most of us are stuck fighting - the idea of when to upgrade, knowing that new better tech is just around the corner...
 
Actually the 6800nu is still a big step up from the 9800 series. Owning both I know that I can run 1600x1200 2xAF highest quality in every game and still out perform the 9800 pro(oced to XT) at 1280x1024 on those settings. The reason I point that out is because most of the time, 6800nu's go for the same price or cheaper than the 9800XT/pro.
 
It depends what people class as a 'big step up'. I would personally not really class going up one resolution with maybe a small bit of aa a big step. That's not meant to be taken personally - lots of enthusiasts will think of that as a big step. Moving from a 9800-series would need a jump to a 6800GT I would say.

That 9800XT should sell for a reasonable price so getting a 6800GT might not need the sort of financial investment you think.
 
Thats true, the GT is a monumental difference because its got twice the pipelines and 30% more memory bandwidth than the XT. The non ultra has 50% more pipelines and about the same memory bandwidth. The only problem with the 9800XT's is they're selling for more than the X800 pro's are. :eek: The GT's are about 350 and up on newegg and the nu's can be had for about 250-300, and sometimes 200.
 
I'm with the "wait" crowd.
A 9800XT is still a great card for today's games (bet you can run HL2 in 1600x1200 with 4xAA/16xAF on it with little or no trouble).
6800s and X800 are a tad faster, sure... but they're a big investment. There are new cards coming out every 6 months or so...so the next cards are only a few months away, and they should make your investment more worthwhile... and in the meantime, the 9800XT should still be able to play any game that comes out at decent speed and quality.
 
Well, considering you can sell your XT on ebay for $220-250 and you can get a 6800 on sale for under $250, I'd say upgrade. Wont cost you much, if anything at all. ;)
 
I ended up getting a X800 Pro from work for only $200 bucks.

Only thing: It has no heatsing or fan.

lol still a great deal....it's called ati siliencer 4 and arctic silver 5 haha

A 6800nu would be the next best step up, but to see a very big difference I'd go with a 6800GT.
