I am in dire need of a new video card and am pretty set on the 9800XT I am just not sure of which one to get. I have looked at the Asus, the Abit and the standard ATI card, the Asus has a little more than I need. Does anyone have an suggestions or experiences with different 9800XT cards? If you do give me a shout, Thanks for any info

I have looked at a couple Sapphire cards, I have heard are pretty descent, they are:

1. "SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800XT Video Card, 256MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "ULTIMATE RADEON 9800XT" -RETAIL"
$445

2. "SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800XT Video Card, 256MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "ATLANTIS RADEON 9800XT" -RETAIL"
$434

3. "SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800XT Video Card, 256MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP -OEM"
$399

But as a side note the X800 Pro is only $461.....?

I am willing to spend up to $500 on the card to ensure DOOM III's approval as a side note.

I am also wondering if it is worth paying a little more and getting the X800 Pro? Or just getting a nice 9800XT.

Thanks again for any input and support

well, buy getting an x800 pro, you'd be nearly doubling your peformance. (than with a 9800 series). I'd go for the x800

If doom 3 is what you're aiming at, you're better jump on the nvidia bandwagon. It's OpenGL. Otherwise, X800p or 9800xt are fine.

I would strongly recommend waiting out the urge to purchase a card now. All the prices right now are at a premium because of the latest flock of X800 and 6800 cards to hit the shelves. Depending on what card you have, what games you play, and how often you play them, I would without a doubt hold out for the PCI-E cards to break out at the end of this month.

Even if you don't plan on going the PCI-E route initially (something most should consider), I would hold out until their releases because it will drive down the cost of the inferior interfaced X800 AGP cards, and will make even more vendors with stock piles of 9800XT's and 9800PRO go berserk on their prices to try to clear stock.

So if you want the latest and greatest that will not be worth your dollar right now unless you wipe you're butt with money, buy that $500 card today.

If you are smart, you'll wait just a few more weeks.... or even, buy a special deal 9800 (I've seen them for around $175 online), and save up for PCI-E and a X800 R423 upgrade down the line....

Good luck... and if DOOM3 and HALF-LIFE2 are what you are waiting for, wait for them to come out, and see what card performs best on each's engine and buy smart...

Good lucking getting PCI-E at the end of the month..........8x AGP isn't even fully utilized now...

If you continued to read my post, you'd note that I wrote that it would even benefit those who don't opt for the PCI-E cards because of the saturation of stock vendors will incur upon.

And as far as buying it when it comes out, I wouldn't because first you are paying for the privledge to be the first to have it, and second because you don't know what manafacturer's edition is the better performer/deal.

As far as full AGP8x not being fully utilized, I grant you that you have a point, yet, PCI-E isn't the last generation of a dead interface, it's the start of a whole new evolution of computing. Buy a month after PCI-E comes out, and you should be in good shape either way. Buy an actual PCI-E card two months after PCI-E debuts, and you'll be in excellent shape having a very well performing card and the option to upgrade to something better in the future.

AGP ports and cards are not going to disappear overnight...it will take a year at least i reckon. It took ages for ISA slots and such like to be phased out...

The X800Pro is nearly twice as fast as the 9800XT and is close to the cost. The 9800XT flat out does not make sense. Unless you got one at half the price of an X800Pro I don't feel like it would make sense for anyone.

Purchasing a card now depends on what your doing now, how soon your going to get a PCI-E board and so on.

My sole reason for the upgrade is not only for DOOM III ;) but also because it is about time I joined the current as well asit would make Far Cry, UT2004, Half-Life 2, DOOM III run a hell of a lot smoother, that and I think (not 100% sure) that that would solve my overclocking problem (having a card that can take a little more juice)

I just got my sytem (PIV 2.8C/Abit IC7-G/1GBCorsar XMS PC3200LL) Less than a year ago and I have had it "running:rolleyes:" (completely my fault) for about 3 months total out of the year (due to constant case/hardware mods :D) Before that I had a PIII 450/DFI TA64-B/768 various MB's of PC100 which I had since July '99. So as far as PCI-E is concerned It's gonna be a while, because I havnt even barely gotten any use out of my current system. So good old AGP is gonna be fine for me.

Thanks for everyones support it is much appreciated.:D

I have just one more Question, when is the X800XT PE scheduled to come out?

You can get X800XT's online now I think. Or you will in the comming 2 weeks I believe.

I don't see why anyone who wants to upgrade now would wait for PCI-E, It's going to be a good year before we see all the initial flaws fixed from the launch of PCI-E and on top of that its a mandatory mobo upgrade just to use the card. I currently have a 9800XT, and I have great results with it, the graphics potiental has never been met nor will it for a good while. And besides, the graphics on the PCI-E will not be a huge jump from AGP, it will take time for that to happen, granted you will get better FPS. But I think if you have a 9800 pro or better you will be fine for at least a year.

By the way, new member to the forums, great place for info :)
