9800xt vs 6600gt

is the difference between these cards pretty big, i know the 9800xt is 256 while the 6600gt is only 128, does this make a difference between the 2? which would run better?
 
The 6600GT outpaces the XT. Plus it has the featureset of the NV40. Defintelly the 6600GT is the better buy.
 
The big difference is one is AGP 8x and the other is PCI-Express 16x. Plus, the 6600GT rapes the 9800xt.
 
unfortnatly i bought a socket478, so no pci express for me, the agp8x wont make that much of a difference wiill it?

None at all. Just no SLI.
 
You might be waiting an extremely long time for a 6600 AGP though, if its even ever made at all.

6600 is meant to fill Nvidias PCI-E gap, of which they have no products (5750 PCI-E prototype never really launched, and the mythical 6800 PCI-E with SLI is just as rare.) I'd expect all initial 6600s to start hitting the shelves soon to all be PCI-E, If an AGP version ever shows up it would probably be late next year.

Performance is good, but in no way "kills" a 9800pro/xt. It handily beats a X600 however.

i would put the 9800xt 256 as a bit more powerful in the higher res/IQ settings then the 6600gt 128. However, as soon as nvidia releases its planned 6600 gt 256 mg, its all gone for the 9800xt

AGP 6600s will come out a month or two after their PCI-E parts. There's no reall mainstream AGP parts out there and Nvidia needs to fill in the gap. This is also EXACTLY why Nvidia was forward-thinking enough to go with the bridged route, it won't be a big hassle to push out AGP 6600s.
 
I dunno, if the prices aren't reduced for the X800Pro's (the X700's look like 9200's compared to the 8500's, if you know what i mean), I'm beginning to wonder what exactly ATi is going to do.

If and when 6600GT hits AGP, buying any other <$200 video card will be money wasted. ATi right now has a gaping hole from $200-$400.

Why doesn't ATI release some X800 non-pros? While I was saving to get a vanilla 6800, it seems that waiting just a lil longer may be worth it to see how the 6600GT will affect pricing for the entire nv40 line.

I swear I heard everyone asking this question about nvidia last year.
I'll tell ya what they are going to do; ATI is going to produce a chip that will smoke the 6800 core. Then about 8-14 months later Nvidia will produce one that smokes ATI's chip.
And everytime they do we are gonna run out and buy a new card.
If I didn't know any better I would think they are working together and laughing thier asses off.

The [H] review of the 6600GT says AGP versions will be available by end of this year, not next year. Where are you getting your time related information on the 6600GT? I'm just curious where you got your "probably be late next year" info.

I'm referring more to market segmentation than anything else. I've already seen the benches, everyone has. ATi set themselves up. Obviously, if the x800 Pro and XTPE were wiping the floor, my whole talk about segmentation wouldn't be coming up, but since they aren't, it is a bigger issue now.
 
XT is still $300 new. GT is $200 and will have the featureset of the new generation. Easy decision, IMO.
 
he doesnt have PCI-E! if you can wait 2 months, then wait for the 6600GT AGP, if not, get the 9800XT Now. right now i have a 6800 series card (look at mys ignature) and im upgrading to a 3500+ 939 system, but im buying a 9800XT instead of a 6800NU because i play with AA and AF allot.

though, i WAS going to buy the LGA775 shuttle and get a 6600GT in PCI-E, but the performance hit was too great for an 'upgrade'.

btw: you can get 9800XT's used for 240$ everywhere
