9800XT upgrade??

I'm running a 9800XT (actually its a 9800 pro 256, with the flashed BIOS) on a P4 3.2 and 2 gig of ram. I'm getting odd colorations and lines flashing on my screens depending on the game, some I can live with some SUCK BIG (F.E.A.R. I get tiny little red dots, on AOE III I get big lines flashing throughout the screen)

I've updated drivers, put on another third party cooler, even rebuilt my machine from scratch, but these irregularities wont go away, so im assuming the card is on its last legs. so I want to upgrade.....im really bothered that I get such bad performance in F.e.a.r., and even half life 2 and doom 3 had some pretty hard hits running on this card. My machine is good, and I don't want to have to buy a new motherboard and DDr2 ram just to put in a PCI-e Card. I am in the beginning stages of buying parts for a new PCI-e machine but it will be 4 to 6 months before its completed. My question.....is the 6800GS (agp) going to give me a superior boost in performance over the 9800XT or should I just deal with the irregularities for the next 6 months? I really want to be able to play FEAR or HL2 or DOOM3 in higher resolutions, but the Frame rates get so slow with this card, I cant deal, and I end up in 800 X 600 or if im lucky 1024......any opinions???
 
have you tried re-flashing the video bios back to the 9800 Pro?

yes, the 6800 GS AGP will give you a boost in performance from your 9800 XT.

IMO consider these three factors:
1) opportunity cost: what i spend now, could it be spent on something for my PCI-E build?
2) budget: can i afford it and still meet my timeline for my new PCI-E build?
3) use: how much longer can/will i use it for before my new PCI-E build is up and running?

If you didn't have an R360 core, flashing card would be a very bad idea. My first 9800 Pro was an R350 core, it died at stock clocks after several months. Second 9800Pro I have (currently using) has an R360 core. I have overclocked it to 9800XT speeds and it runs great with Zalman VF-700Cu.

Just underclock your card with ATi tool and have it set the core at 380mhz and memory at 340mhz at boot. Might preserve your card a bit longer.

I personally think it would be a waste of your money to buy a temp card for 4-6 months, unless 9800XT dies. If it dies, get a 6600GT for $139 bucks at the Egg for a filler card. It is a faster card than 9800Pro/XT.

Save up for new computer.
