hey guys, just wondering, will about 1 min total without a heatsink seate don the core of my 9800XT cook the GPU?

i replaced the TEC cooling i had on my 9800XT back to the stock heatsink, and i dunno how but the heatsink was making no contact with the GPU core. i tried to boot up and i got severe video corruption 2 times.i then felt the card and it was hot to the touch. i took off the heatsink and checked it out, the AS5 i had on it was brown in color. i then put more AS5 on and got a full footprint of the core in thermal paste, reapplied the heatsink and all was well. however, i think i may have ruined my mobo/CPU . it has been abused to the fullest with TEC and water cooling being swapped numerous times. it has scratches and the CPU has been ripped from the socket 2 times due to a good lapping job and thermal paste making a air tight seal on the CPU and HSF base. also, the card will show me my BIOS and will let me get to ALMOSt boot into windows. will a videa card beaing bad not allow you to boot into windows?

i booted 2 times and got severe video corruption in my POST screens. the screen just went to fuzz 2 times but i ripped the power cord both times as soon as i saw it. does anyone thing this fried the GPU core on my 9800XT?

i know this was farked up, and im just hoping that i didnt ruion this 400$ card.

i just bought a athlon 64 3400+ and a new asus mobo so we will see soon, jus some reassurance is needed lol..

thanks

That's really, really bad. I would say the gpu is baked. :(

yah im pretty sure vid cards dont throtlle back when they get really hot, like modern CPUs do

am i right? I dont wanna give people bad info

Geez man... it sounds like you need to think about doing a complete system rebuild :( . You've abused the hell out of most of your major components, and the wear is starting to show. Im sorry, but I think your system is giving up the ghost. At least NOW you've got LOTS of experience in what NOT to do :)

Guess you learn from your experiences and be real careful on your next system build.

,lol, iv built plenty of systems, but this one was one of my EXPARAMENtal systems. I was fooling with a lotta different stuff and yeah, the parts got pretty abused lol. but its all good, i wouldnt have been trying the things i tried if i didnt have the funds to replace it all.

last night o ordered an FX 51 chip and an Sk8n to play with. i think ill just leave it all stock and game on. im kinda tired of tweakin shit low.

oh ya, i think the video card is good. the core has no discoloration and it will show me my bios and all that without any artifacts. i dont think its cooked. it didnt smoke or anything, so i doubt it is ruined.

thanks for the replies.

sounds like it was indeed damaged...
just try to get the stock stuff back on as nice looking as possible and RMA it.

i saw that lol. i cancelled my orders and reordered a 3400+and an asus K8V Deluxe instead.

i dont really have a budget as i make over 130k a year, so i just thought id get the best, but why waste money lol.. your right the 3400+ is the shiznit. the K8V Deluxe says it will support PC3200, but will it support my mushkin PC3500? as it is pretty much just hyped up PC3200?

as far as the 9800XT, i dont think it fried. i can view the bios screen and everything with no problem. and the chip doesnt get hot anymore now that i seated the HSF the right way. no artifacts at all. also, now my mobo and CPU will not post at ALL. so i have determined that is is either a dead mobo, or dead CPU. i unpluged everything from the mobo except the ram, and the CPU and tried to get beep codes, and whaddaya know, nothing. not a single beep. that thing should sounded like a whistler rocket without a vod card or hard drives. the lights all come on, the fans power up and spin, and the otes LED's come on, but no beeps, no nothing.

i dont have another P4 layin around to test for CPU but, it could be that. i dropped the CPU when i removed the neoprene shit from inside the socket and bent about 6 pins. i straitened them out and thought it would work, but i guess something is shot. since the board isnt even givin me beep codes i am figuring it is just the mobo. reason i am tinking this is because i have actually ripped the CPU out of the locked socket about 3 times. i couldnt get the damn thing out any other way due to the air tight seal with the HSF base. that thing was hell for me to even pry off with my fingers let alone trying to keep it in the socket when i removed the TEC device.

anyone know a good way to remove the HSF when you have a super air tight lapped CPU and HSF and they are bonded liek fuckin crazy glue?

i thought about trying to slide it but then the pins would get bent if it did still get yanked out of the socket. cuz im tellin ya guys, this thing was like welded to the base of the TEC device.

thanks for the replies also. i will be testing things out in a week or so when i get it all back up and running.

as far as the motherboard supporting 3500 yes it will it just means its rated at 3200 speeds not 3500 speeds
if you unpluged all your devices including your cpu and didnt get any error beeps then its your motherboard however the cpu still could be dead so you need rma the board you have or get a new one then test the cpu
pulling the cpu out of the socket with p4's is normal considering the large contact area of the IHS i have done it 2 or 3 times its normal with a good contact

you could try a razor blade along the edge of the IHS
also try to twist the cpu

Not sure, but I think you could just run your PC3500 at PC3200 speeds, if there was a problem.

Dude that card has more transisitors than most cpus. A cpu without throttle back will toast in less than 3 seconds with no cooling. I am amazed your video core has any life at all. I would restore it to stock and send it back for warranty. Cross your fingers.
