which one is better in performance wise? since they are both the same price.

FWIW, at stock speeds the 9600xt will be faster than the 9800se. Even if the 9800se has a 265-bit memory bus, the 9600xt will still be slightly faster.

HOWEVER...if the 9800se has a 256-bit memory bus and it can be soft/hardmodded to a 9800pro...then you've got a card that will smoke a 9600xt no matter how high you clock the 9600xt (yes...they overclock nicely. see my sig. 140Mhz o/c on the core ain't all bad :) )

What price are you looking at? b/c right now I'd wait to buy a vid card if I were you. From what I've heard, the 5900xt has dropped to around $150 now...which puts it in the same price point as most 9600xt's and the 5900xt will usually beat it (and they o/c nicely too from what I've heard).

you can get a 9800pro from newegg for about $210.

its my friend, he's on a budget and he's just lookin for sumthing cheap. he's gonna be gaming just a little. but not like hardcore or anything. so i think he's gonna go with 9800 se and thanks for the advice:D

I've heard the Powercolor 9800SE's are the ones to get since they have the 256-bit memory bus (L-shaped memory config). At least then he can have a chance (usually less than 50%) to softmod it to a full 9800pro.

otherwise, the 9600xt would last him a little longer...but not much.

EDIT: If he only does occasional gaming, then he'll probably be satisfied with either as long as he doesn't want to play all the newer games at a res higher than 1024x768 with all the eye candy turned on.

Mine plays most games fine at 1024x768 2xaa, 8 or 16xaf...some games I can pull off 1280x1024 with those settings...but not too many.

n/p. it's always good to get advice from someone who owns one of those cards.
