Has anyone else noticed that the 9800pro is now about the same price as a 5900XT with vivo?

I'm of course talking about the MSI 5900XT VTD128 w/ vivo for $191 and the OEM Sapphire or ATi 9800pro 128MB w/out vivo for $209.

Which card is a better performer at stock speeds?

Which card performs better after a typical OC with stock cooling?

Which card overall is recommended?

Thanks.

better performer at stock speeds:

radeon 9800 pro

better performer with typical stock overclock:

9800 pro

better card:

9800 pro

Whats a better card, the Sapphire or the ATi, assuming both have similar features.

coming from an ati fan. i suggest you just look up benchmarking results. google for em, or tomshardware

No offence but don't look at tomshardware for benchmarks, theres always seem to be way off from everyone elses.

Yup.

Check some decent hardware sites like [H]ard|ocp. I believe they did reviews of both the 9800 pro and the 5900xt.

coming from a tomshardware fan.
I think you have issues if you really believe that the 9800 pro is slower than a 5900xt. In case you didnt know, the xt is a LOWER speed card than the 5900 and 590 ultra. Now the 9800 pro destroys the 5900 in most benchmarks not from tomshardware.com. So I will use google as you suggest.

Now for some from guru3d.com
http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/112/9/

ROUND ONE

5900xt in splinter cell at 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200 gets 46 39 31 26 FPS respectivley. Radeon 9800 pro gets 50 45 35 31.

Round one done, score is 9800 pro 4, 5900xt nothing.

ROUND TWO

aquamark, same resses

FX 5900 XT 48 43 36 29
9800 Pro 50 44 38 30

Round 2 done, r9800 pro 8, 5900xt nothing.

ROUND 3

RTCW 0xAA

FX 5900 XT 131 131 130 122
9800 Pro 129 129 128 124

The 9800 lags at lower resses like 800x600, but who with one of these cards plays at those resolutions anyway? It takes the lead at higher res.

now lets turn on the eye candy as anyone with these cards would do and see what happens...

RTCW 4xAA 8xAF

FX 5900 XT 124 115 95 69
9800 Pro 128 124 108 86

Gentlemen we have a manslaughter.

round 3 done, score r9800 pro 13, 5900xt3

ROUND 4

Unreal 2 0xAA 0xAF

5900xt 97 84 66 52
9800 Pro 99 95 83 69

OUCH

Unreal 2 4xAA 8xAF

FX 5900 XT 61 48 35 25
9800 Pro 86 73 57 43

You still not convinced?

round 4 done, score r9800 pro 21, 5900xt 3

FINAL SCORE: Radeon 9800 pro 21, Geforce fx5900XT 3

POST MATCH ANAYLSIS: The Radeon 9800 pro emerged the clear winner in this Monday Night Fight. It captured the performance crown from the 5900xt in all but 3 instances. One of the two instances in which the 5900xt wsa faster was a resolution that nobody with this card would play at, 800x600. The other two had no eye candy on, also which no one with this card would do. I think the winner is clear, my friends. The belt goes to the 9800 pro.

Convinced, nvidiot?

Theres only one thing in favor of Nvidia cards. And that's the drivers. ATI drivers blow goats........

doesnt matter, if you have the dough, get the sapphire 9800 Pro 256MB, it's actually an XT. ( Runs DDRII though, so ramsinks = teh win )

Trust me, I was very happy to see the R360 written on the GPU when I installed the water block ;)

Hardly true, they are pretty much even these days. Why in the face of such annihilation do you harp on outdated issues?

I used to be an nVidia fan myself but I "saw the light."

To add some info, although some of those benchmarks look close, turn up AA/AF and the FX really shows its weakness. ATI can run high aa/af without slowing down while nvidia really bogs.

I vote for the 9800pro. I picked mine up at BestBuy last week for $200.

The MSI card has VIVO. You listed a card which specifically has the VIVO feature, so I assume you think it's important. So, if you need that feature, go with that card.
