Because Im thinking of upgrading my 9800 pro to a 6800GT or a x800 i decided to try (my first time ever) a VGPU mod using a variable resistor with my card... dont have much to loose if i screw up... except being tied to a 16mb PCI card i have laying around in the time i order a newer card.
This is going to be kinda long... i need to vent, its a semi confession of my stupidity.
Solder skills? Nope... god didnt bless me with such skills...it was messy, but i managed to clean all the pins i joined in the mess.. took a good 30 mins just to clean everything, but i never managed to attach the resistor to the pins.
Then i decided i was going to try the pencil mod... did it... took a voltage reading... 1.7v... nothing at all. Sad... wrong pencil? tried again... 1.71v...
Then i had this idea... i dont need to solder the resistor... ill do it super ghetto style.
Because i did managed to solder 2 cables that i took from a floopy cable to the resistor i just removed all the little wires but two from tip of the cable, rolled them up with my fingers and pushed the small cables under the pins used a thin piece of metal to pull the cable and tied each cable to its corresponding pin, then taped everything so it doesnt make contact...and there i go.
Crazy? not that crazy..... But, after all i made the poor card go thru with the butchery i make of soldering, i was a little scared it might not work at all.
I had no way to test if the card was working or not, because the computer at my office doesnt like newer AGP cards at all, and doesnt even boots with a 8500LE...
Here is where it REALLY went very very bad. When i turned the PC on, i had the 10k resistor set to the lowest resistance... uh? whats that? yes, 3.0v to the GPU!
I froze for about 5 seconds just staring at the voltimeter, and instead of pulling the plug, or pressing the PS switch i just pressed the shut down button.. that took 4 more seconds, yes, im a complete idiot. Then i moved the resistor all the way to the highest resistance turned the pc on and slowly set VGPU to 1.8v, but still i had no way of knowing if the card worked or not.
I had very little hopes of the card working at all, so when i got home, about 2 hours ago, slapped the card back in my computer... turned the thing on with an expectation of watching a POST screen looking like a trip on acid or at worse a blank screen, but it posted just just fine, and went in windows just fine, i couldnt belive that it was working right...so tried atitool for about 45 mins, max GPU is 426mhz (from max 400mhz before), ran Americas Army, no issues.
Amazing little card...
