9800Pro to 9800XT problem

It's a minor problem really, but annoying none-the-less.

After I flashed the BIOS of the 9800Pro 256MB sucessfully, I rebooted into windows XP SP1, and it immediatly detected my video card as a 9800XT, no problems so far. I already had Catalyst 4.9 drivers installed when I originally installed the card as a 9800Pro.

So my problem is this: When I go into the Advanced properties tab in the Display Properties, there are no tabs other than the basic "General, Adapter, Monitor, Troubleshoot, Color Management". As where before I flashed the BIOS it had all the extras like "Overlay, SMARTGART, 3D, VPU Recovery" Basically, all the ATI supplied goodies.

Now I have used 3DMark03 to bench the card before and after the mod just to see if there was a performance gain. Before I was getting 5998 at stock clock speeds. After I modded the BIOS i got 6990, and that was at 9800XT stock clock speeds. The only difference was that futuremark would not allow me to post the results to the project manager. Something about drivers or something... It didn't really define why it wouldn't allow me to post the results.

So with all this information, something doesn't seem to be working 100%, and I was wondering what possibly could be the problem. Is it the BIOS i used, or the Catalyst drivers, or Windows? I don't know.

reinstall the drivers

the reason you cant see all of the stuff in the control panel, is you "installed" a new card, you no longer have a 9800Pro, you have a 9800XT. the catalysts are installed for a 9800Pro.

Oh, I'm sorry, I actually did that. I uninstalled the drivers twice. Through the control panel. Once I did that, windows asked me to reboot. I rebooted and after startup, windows installed the drivers automatically.

Second time: I uninstalled the drivers more thoroghly. I deleted all the files, so windows coudn't automatically reinstall them. Rebooted... That worked... I then downloaded the latest drivers (Again) and installed them. Rebooted, and same problem.

Oh, one other thing I noticed...

When I go to Display Properties, I click Advanced, go to the Adapter tab, and there under Chip Type, it says, and I quote:

"RADEON 9800XT AGP (0x4E4A)"

That additional "0x4E4A" has be a bit confused. I'm sure that info is coming from the new BIOS I flashed to the card. Maybe the BIOS i flashed is not the fully ATI supported bin file?

Under BIOS Information I see:

"BK-ATI VER008.015.048.000"

Anybody out there who may have done this process before can check to see if this version matches yours.

Thanks

"0x4E4A" is okay, that's normal. So is the BIOS version. Out of curiousity, did you try the new CCC with this card yet? And also, most of these features can be controlled with third-party programs, it would interesting to see if you retain control with those.

Thanks Maxx, for that verification. I'm downloading CCC right now, maybe that will solve my problems... As for third party apps, what do you recommend? I tried RadLinker, and it worked fine on both Pre Mod and Post Mod.

I'll post my results with the CCC when i have it installed.

You can also try ATI Tray Tools and ATI Tool, I also use RivaTuner...and RadClocker/Linker of course...although I think RadLinker doesn't play well with the CCC.

Okay, I installed CCC. Funny thing... It fixed my problem that I was having so I now have all the advacned tabs including OVERDRIVE. I'm happy now, but CCC won't launch. I get an error that says it can't initialize properly (0xc0000135), but it sounds like that's a problem a few people are having. I don't really care to run CCC anyway, so it doesn't matter to me.

Well, I'm running 3DMark03 now, and I'll see if I'm able to post results this time.

Yeah, many people are having that issue, look for a fix in 4.10. If you don't plan on using the CCC, you can disable all the stuff on startup that's related in order to save RAM. As far as 3DMark03 goes, your scores are exactly what I would expect, hopefully you'll be able to submit this time.

Thanks again Maxx. I do have CCC disabled, to save system memory. As for 3DMark03, I have rerun the tests after I reinstalled the drivers. To my surprise I scored 7103. That was with some OCing, but I'm very happy with those results. Still was unable to post the results, but it was due to system maintenance through futuremark. I'll try again in the morning.

I did notice on futuremark's site they don't have the new Cat drivers as "verified and approved" drivers. They worked fine when the card was a 9800Pro, but not as an XT? Like I said, I'll try again in the morning.. maybe it was their servers.

You never know, but it's not hugely important. As long as you have the control you want and the performance you expect...well, that's good enough in my book.

The newest version of RadLinker works with CCC. My computer was rebooting whenever I tried to access the advanced display properties. Turned out that my version of Radlinker was conflicting with CCC...even after I uninstalled the CCC.

Glad to hear you got most everything working. \o/

Yea, thanks Ricky, I'm happy now that I got this worked out. I never would have thought that installing CCC would have fixed it, even though CCC didn't work itself, but CCC is not something I wanted anyway, so no skin off my teeth. :D
