9800pro performance with doom3

was just wondering what i should set my settings at in the game and in the control panel so that i the game looks good but but plays well. right now (in the control panel) i have everything set to application preference but when i play doom3 at 1024x768 i barely max out at 30FPS(which sucks) and i would like to know what you guys have in mind or know of ways to get better performance with doom3 without sacrificing too much image quality. and my system specs are below my post. thnx :)
 
i have been running at 1024x768 no sweat, fps above 30. my system is:
radeon 9800 pro aiw, athlon 64 3200+, 1 GB DDR333, k8n neo platium
