i have a 9800pro and sometimes when i turn on the pc the display is either checkered or has verticle lines all across the screen.

my card is not o/c-ed (and in fact i have now lowered it from stock to see if it would help but it hasn't).

when this happens i must switch off the pc and reboot from cold, otherwise the artifacts are always present, but never happens during when the pc is on.

i think it happens more often when i've been playing games.

is my card biting the dust? i don't want to replace it.
is there any way i can fix it?
 
Bad news is that it does sound like you card is on its last legs, however since you said ut usually happens after you have been gaming then it more than likely has something to do with the card overheating. If you still have the stock cooling on the card, then try upgrading to a better aftermarket cooler such as an ATi Silencer. If you are already using an aftermarket cooler then make sure that it is making proper contact with the core. The GPU shim on the 9800's core keeps some coolers from making a good contact with the core.

i don't want to spend any money on fans or upgrades cos i'm waiting for next year or some time to upgrade my whole rig.

i'll try reattaching the heatsink.
