I finally got a mobo with 8x agp on it, but if it's on 8x some time after I play some games my screen flickers a bit then I get a distorted pixelated green screen. Sometimes I can alt tab out and desktop is fine. I turned it down to 4x and no problems after a few hours. Why can't it run at 8x?

Motherboard: Asus A8V Deluxe
Videocard: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb

Welcome to the we're stuck at AGP 4X group. It's a much larger group then you would suspect. My 9700 Pro is in the same situation. But since you only lose a few percent dropping from 8X to 4X, we don't let it bother us. The reason that full speed AGP and fast writes tend to be flakey is because they are transfering data like a bat-outta-hell. AGP 8X transfers data on a 66MHz clock, octuple pumped, 32 bits wide, using a non-differential 0.8V swing, usually over a four layer board (if you don't know hardware then just think "Be Afraid. BE VERY AFRAID!"). Be happy you found the solution. Lot's of people never find the problem and are just stuck with flakey setups.
