I'm thinking about buying the card as I don't think I'll want to throw over $300 into a 6800gt, what kinda of 3dmark01 scores should I expect w/o it being oced ?

the comp it would be on:
amd64 3400+ clawhammer
msi k8t mobo
1gb ddr400 ram

Thanks...

You'd prolly be getting around 18-20,000 in 2001 and around 4-5,500 In 03. You could also try getting a 6800nu that would be a step up in performance from that.

My system:
P4 2.4C @ 3.0 GHz
Abit IS7-E (865PE chipset)
512MB Corsair XMS2700 (167 MHz)
128MB 9800 Pro

With my memory timings very "loose", my 3DMark 2001SE score was 17,938. Changing the memory timings to 2-2-2-5 added about 1000 points. Overclocking the card (stock was something like 378/337) to 452/398 with the timings at 2-2-2-5 yielded my top score: 19,630.

Depending on the timings of your memory, and possibly your hard drive or some other components, your score should be better than mine.

3DMark03 wouldn't run right on my system. I searched their ORB for systems similar to yours, and I think you should pull about a 6000 or so.

Just a side note:
I think 3DMark is a good tool for evaluating system changes/tweaks. However, you should look at the actual games you play (and not a synthetic score) for determining what GPU you're going to put into your system. The common theory is if you are into OpenGL (or Doom3), go with nVidia. If you play more DirectX titles (or Half Life 2), go with ATI. That is of course a very generic rule of thumb, and I'm sure there are some that disagree with it.

if u don't want to spend over 300.. why get the 9800pro when u can get a 6800nu or 6600gt for under 300? and the 9800pro on 3dmark2001se on ur system with ur quick cpu would get u around 20,000-22,000

My April '03 bought r350 core 9800Pro o/c'ed @ 421.2/351 powered by rig in sig got the following.

3DMark01 - 20,500

3DMark03 - 6,500

3DMark05 - 2,800 (this score is the card in an older Dell machine 2.6A, PC2100)
