9800Pro 128mb vs 256mb

How much of a difference in performance is the 128mb 9800pro vs the 256mb 9800pro?

My brothers computer has a 9800pro 256mb and it runs beautifuly, just wondering how noticable a difference 128 is compaired to the 256:)
 
Well, enless it's overclocked there really is no difference. The memory is used to store textures on the card. Enless your running intense games with a lot of textures and rendering and stuff, 128 MB should be fine. I always go with the 256 MB though if I have the money. If you have enough money on your budget, go with 256 MB, if not 128 MB is fine. But don't go with 64 MB, not enough for most modern games.


PS Shouldn't this be moved to video cards? :eek:
 
Alot of people have tested the two side by side (I think even [H] has an article somewhere) seeing if the extra memory really makes a difference. Answer is, not really.

Not to many games/apps are written to take advantage of the extra memory. Will this change down the line, probably, but for now there isnt a game on the market that will take advantage of it .... insert correction here, I could be wrong ....

I would check the site to see if you could find the article, or someone might be so kind as to get you the link to it....

I wouldnt drop the extra cash for it right now, esp with the new chipsets and PCI-X around the corner. Save the extra bucks for your new PCI-X card and just get yourself the 128 for now, you wont be dissappointed....
 
Thanks for the info guys. I'm hearing all good things for the 9800pro 128mb on newegg so I might just rma my 9700pro asap. 9800pro is better performance and only 30 bucks more, looks good imo.

Yes, I'm not looking to upgrade too much atm, kinda just itching to buy something new for the fun of it though. Even though all the new junk is comeing out like new mobo style and the express cards or w/e if i'm saying this right, I really just want to blow some cash :p

PS It probably SHOULD be in video cards but no one will answer within 5 minutes will they /evilgrin
 
i thought that the 256mb could run AA/AF alot better. or am i completely wrong on that one?
 
Yea, 128 to 256 is not much difference at all. From what I've read it's like a 2-3% difference of improvement. Hardly noticable (from what users say). But I'd go with the 256 if money wasn't an issue. Otherwise hit up the 128 and save some bucks.

notice the bundle difference between bulk and retail. just a few games/demos. waste of $9 in my opinion.

I personally think they cannot if they have the DDR II memory. But if they have the DDR I used in XT boards then they sure as hell can!
 
i'd say, save some money and got with 128mb. i bought my 64mb radeon 8500 almost 2 years ago and the 64mb is still enough for what it is. the card is not new by any means, so it doesn't run the new games as well as i'd like, but another 64mb of memory on it wouldn't help that much and have cost me another $60-100. anyway, if it isn't more than $40ish more for a 256mb model i'd consider it, but i don't think you'll find that.

(ps: don't rag on my 8500, it is a soldier. if [online retailer - sorry don't want anyone to get cross and hurt my chances by complaining...] fulfills my order, it will soon go in my hall of fame. the deal is, amazon screwed up a price or something, and a group of people, myself included, ordered Visiontek Xtasy 9800 Pro 256mb cards for the lowly sum of $217.88. now we play the waiting game as [online retailer] hasn't decided what to do yet. wish me luck :))
 
My personal opinion is that by the time games start requiring 256mb to run properly the video card itself will be near outdated. Also the 128mb cards generally overclock better so I see no reason to pay more for a 256mb card with the current generation.
 
personally, i'd shy away from DDR2 right now, just because of some stated latency issues w/it.. otherwise, i think getting a 9800 pro is more than sufficient for the current generation of games..just my opinion

sigh, looks like my radeon 8500 is going on another tour of duty. the [online retailer] was amazon.com. today, they cancelled all orders of the card for that price, as far as everyone knows. it is kinda irritating. i wouldn't be pissed off if i got an e-mail saying that they had a pricing error and couldn't honor that price. the e-mail i got stated that the item was out of stock and that they won't get more from visiontek. this clearly isn't the case, as this was a preorder for a shipment they will get in a few weeks. oh well, at least i tried ;). now i just wait for R420.
 
yeah i jsut got the same email space. that sux. anyways, i know that theres really no difference in games out now, but i wanted that card for games like farcry and doom3.
