Is the VGA Silencer the only way to go for a 9800pro? I can't seem to find the ATI Silencer anywhere. Would it be less effective?

I've got the original VGA Silencer. Seems to have more surface area than the new ATI Silencer 1.

I bought the VGA Silencer Rev 3 but am scared to install it and f*ck something up.

AFAIK the AC VGA rev.3 is the only AC product that is compatible with the 9800 Pro 128MB. the AC VGA Silencer Rev. 3 works wonderfully and as long as you read the directions and take care with the install it's a cinch. Pair that up with 8 copper OCZ or Vantec ramsinks and your golden for OCing. Make sure to use AS5 on the CPU for best results.

I have the AC ATI Silencer rev 1 on my 9800pro 128. Along with some Zalman ram sinks.

My VGA silencer rev 2 got installed on the day i got my 9800pro. It helped me get my core up to around 420 but my memory overclocked a whole 10-15mhz. Other than the dissapointing overclock it cools better than stock and is really quiet

Hrmm I had installed a VGA Cooler Rev 3 and some aluminum ram sinks on my old 9800 Pro... can't remember exactly but I got something like 60-70MHz on the core and 40-50HMz on the memory.

What's the difference between the VGA Silencer Rev 3 and the ATI Silencer Rev 1,2,3,4,5 ??!?!?!?

the VGA Silencer is a generic cooler for just the GPU, it should fit on a number of cards. the other ones are specialized to a particular card, and they cool the ram chips as well.

^^^ or thats their tale, i sit on mine. :p

FWIW I've had an AC rev3 on my 9800p for near 8mths now and it helped the overall cooling for the card tremendously also helped the core along a whole 10mhz more. (430 when the card isnt busy frying during the summer :/ )

my 2 cents

Sooooooo...if I WERE to get one for my 9800 Pro, it would be "better" to get the ATI Silencer Rev that fits my 9800 Pro over the VGA Silencer Rev3 ??

And is it really worth the extra $$?? I can get the VGA Silencer Rev 3, for around $19 shipped from Newegg, where the ATI silencer Rev's seem to be $17-20+ just for the card w/out shipping, so it would probably be over $23+ for the ATI Silencer and a difference of about $4 or so between the VGA and the ATI.

there is no Ati Silencer for the 9800Pro. The one you have to get (cause it's the only one that fits the 9800) is the VGA Silencer. And to cool your ram chips i'd get either the OCZ or Vantec copper ramsinks. they fit nice nice under the Silencer.

Uhh, the 9800 128MB and the 9800 Pro 128MB are the same cards. The ATI Silencer 1 can fit on both. The 256MB cards, however, require a different solution.

I use the Arctic Cooling VGA silencer rev.3 on my 9800 pro, and also OCZ copper ramsinks. I actually don't care too much about overclocking, but I do like the fact that everything is much cooler. I gained 15 Mhz on my Core and 10 MGhz on my memory by adding these things. I pretty much leave it at stock or just above stock speeds however. I just like tinkering, and knowing that it is cooler than stock.

i was just about to repost and say that. :D Ati Silencer 1 Rev. 2 works on:

* Radeon 9500 to 9700 (also including SE, Pro, XT)
* Radeon 9800 (also including SE, Pro)
* X800 AIW (AGP/PCIE)
* X600 (also including Pro, XT, AIW)
* X700 (also including Pro, AIW)

but you have to cut a part of the plastic fan housing to fit one (or 2??) of the ramsinks - at least on the rev. 1 & 9800Pro this holds true.
