How does the 5870 compare to the 9800GX2,

Does anyone know how the 5870 would compare to the 9800GX2. How is the power consumption compared to it and also the heat? anyone that has a 9800GX2 kows that it is a small space heater and brings the temps in your room up by an easy 10 degrees!

im going to go out on a limb and say the 5870 blows the 9800gx2 out of the water.

it's comparing a new card to a card that's 2 generations old.

+1

The 9800GX2 is quicker than a GTX260 by a small margin. Imagine two GX2's w/o the microstudder and w/o the power consumption and you get a 5870... sorta. :p

It would depend a lot on how well the game worked with SLI, but it would be an improvement regardless.

im pretty sure the 5870 would win.

with the GTX280 and 9800GX2 been almost the same range (5-10 frame difference at sometimes) and we should all know that the 5870 would beat the GTX280 by sum sum making the 5870 better then the 9800GX2

I have no doubt it's better, but I wonder how much better. It feels like all these "new" cards have just been incremental upgrades, providing 10 more fps. Nothing truly groundbreaking (except for Eyefinity).

...Have you read the reviews? When does the 5870 only provide 10 more fps than the 4870?

every dual-GPU owners knows about it :p

thats why I am selling my 4890s right now.....

its way too freaking hot these days, keeps going up 100+F lately, unbearable...

but during the winter time... wooo its soo much nicer to have a warmer in the room...

Oh yeah, a 4850 during winter is also pretty cozy.

The 9800GX2 had similar performance on paper, but it's drivers sucked. The Geforce GTX 280 provided a much better gaming experience and didn't have the AA/AF weaknesses at 2560x1600 that the gimpy memory configuration of the 9800GX2 had.

Still your point is more or less spot on. The 5870 is faster than the Geforce GTX 285. That makes it faster than the Geforce 9800GX2. It also has DX11 support and of course support for Eyefinity which makes it a card with better features. It also features an HDMI port directly on the card which is something I'm glad to see. NVIDIA's HDMI passthrough BS also sucked. That's one thing AMD/ATI implemented much better.

I don't have the 9800gx2 but i am sure the 5870 is cooler, plus the biggest difference is you no longer have to deal with profiles and SLI issues.

does anyone know the length compared tot he 9800GX2?

9800gx2 and 5870 should be comparable in length. there's like a spec for how long pci-e cards can be. neither card should be over the spec, but i suspect they're both very close to the limit.

The ATX chassis specificiations are what determines the maximum supported card length. The motherboard or PCI-Express specifications have nothing to do with that. Most modern cases are actually in violation of the specification (early specifications anyway, I'm uncertain of all the specific revisions) and do not support full length expansion cards.

i really dont have nay room to spare in my case, so anyone know the exact size compared to the 9800GX2

The 5870 is 10.5 inches long. I can't remember what size the 9800GX2 was, I think it was the same. In any case, you can just open up the case and measure it. I'm fairly certain it wouldn't be bigger than the 5870, though.

i googled it and it looks like the 9800GX2 is also 10.5 inches so i should be good.

Well the 5870 is going to be a better card but whether you should buy one to replace your 9800GX2 depends on what you do with it and what resolutions.

Well i play at 1900x1200 with 2XAA, i used a 8800GTX for a long time before moving to the 9800GX2 and gameplay on the 8800GTX always felt a lot smoother to me, i know there are SLI issues and microstutter with the 9800GX2, also a power hog and small space heater and was never really impressed with the performance in games like Arma2 and Stalker clear sky(DX10) and others.

So i think the 5870 will be a nice solid card that will hold me for a long time.

No SLI problems
No micro stutter
Less power
Less heat
Better performance
1GB RAM
DX11 for future games

I liked my 4870 better than my 9800gx2 the sssstttttttutttter was horrid

Went from SLI GTX 285s to 5870 and I couldn't be happier. Don't need to deal with profiles (is SLI on or off?), and the stutter was obvious during low fps scenes. I'd rather watch a slide show than continuous jitter. SLI is just a failure--at times when you need the fps the most, it fails to deliver.

the 5870 is faster.
and its a single card.
and its 40nm and uses gddr5.

so power and heat should go down alot, and games should run faster

hated the microstutter , would switch out very easly like I did when i had
