9800gx2 overheat? Or drivers problem?

I have been using my pc (specs below) for 9 months now without any crashes or bsods.
This week thought some crashes occurred while playing 25-30 minutes World of Worcraft. The screen froze with a repeated loop of sound and after a while i saw a bsod and the pc reset by itself. This happend 2-3 times till now.
I installed the programm speed fan and the temps of my 9800gx2 on idle are 80c and the other card 98c(Celsius). When i play WoW goes up to 117C. I know 9800gx2 gets very hot but are those temps normal? And my case is Thermaltake Armor + with 1 fan on front 2 on the bottom 1 big 25cm at side of it ,1 one the top and 1 on the back of the case(overall 6 fan installed). And the room temp with the AC on is about 18-19c.

Any ideas guys? I dont see any crashes except when playing a game...
I see some artifacts after 20-30 minuites of gaming and bsod is up.

I use the latest drivers(not beta)

take a can of compressed air.. or find an air compressor and clean the heatsink out.. its probably clogged with dust..

and if need be check to make sure the fans working and what the fan speeds are at..

Thanks for the quick responce.

I have done this 2 days ago sirmonkey1985
i clean all the dust from 9800gx2 .Its clean as new. And the fans are working properly.

then something isnt right.. either your case has some how gotten insanely hot.. or something else is going on..

have you tried turning the fan up to 100% just to see if the temps change?

how i do this?

Also note that the temps of all the other parts of my pc are very good. Only the 9800gx2 gets extremely hot

install rivatuner and set the fan speed to like 70%, the 9800gx2 was known for overheat and get very hot unless u turn up the speeds on fan.

yeah they are known to get hot.. but 80C is way to friggin hot for an idling 9800GX2.. so either the fan is getting ready to die or the nvidia control's are screwed up and setting the fan speed to low all of a sudden..

Mine idles at about 70'ish C and goes up to anywhere from 85-90C when under load, this with automatic fan control. In Furmark it just seems to keep rising the longer I have it on( eventually reaches 100C ), but it's not a problem in games. You really shouldn't be using it until you've fixed the problem though, 117C could probably kill the card eventually.

Anyway, seeing the big discrepancy between the idle temps of the two GPUs, it's probably not the fan but the heatsink that is the problem. Open up the card and remove the heatsink, then reapply cooling paste on the two GPUs. If some of the thermal pads get ruined as you open it up, you might need to exchange those with cooling paste too. Just make sure that the SLI bridges are properly connected to both cards when you put it back together.

Or if you don't want to do that, RMA the card.

Now I'm a noob here but pulling the heatsinks *on a gx2* doesn't sound like fun to me. And thermal paste might not fully fill the gap between heatsink and ram chips - even if it's fine for the gpu. My 8800 has such THICK thermal pads for the ram chips I'd have no chance replacing them w/o layers and layers of thermal tape and I'd have to measure the gap pretty pecisely to get that right...

I was shocked when I first used my 8800gts - the fan speed was locked @25% even with 70+C temps... Even the nvidia ntune soft couldn't raise it - locked solid

I used everest and speedfan to confirm temps and fan speed then rivatuner to turn fan up to a more or less noiseless 82% (84% whined a bit) and temps down to 55C under load.

That's what I'd do first as a matter of course. Then I'd start reinstalling things like Gfx drivers and WoW and probly mobo chipset drivers too. good luck :)

Well, it's not fun, but it's what I did on my own GX2 once it started heating up too much. The cooling paste does seem to do a decent job of replacing the thermal pads; it's not cooler than when I first bought the card, but like I said, it stays below 90C which works nicely for this card. That said, I did use very generous amounts of cooling paste, especially on the RAM, to make up for the thickness of the thermal pads.

At any rate, my reasoning for it not being the fan and/or drivers, is simply because he stated that one GPU core idled at 80C and the other at 98C. The only reason for this discrepancy when idle is if there's poor connection with the heatsink with at least one of the cards.

Raap - MyBad - If you've done it, you've done it, I have not. I'd just hope the OP tries a few basics that weren't mentioned B4 ripping up a gx2, lol. Esp since my default fan speed was so craply low - I'm surprised at nvidia not making fan speed a whole lot more clever and *obvious* to the user. Unless I got a funny driver/soft from nvidia.

And if any card might be prone to a tiny bit of heatsink discrepancy, it'll be a dual-board card I'd expect :)

they fixed the automatic fan speed crap with the gtx series cards.. the 8 series didnt have an automatic fan speed and nor did most of the 9 series..

Are you saying if I installed an nvidia gtx I would have sensible fan-speeds/temps as installed?

Ok...Last night i was playing WoW for 1 hour and nothing happend, no bosd no nothing.
The temps where arround 105-110 and the other 98-100 (9800gx2)

After i exit WoW i tried to plug my webcam and when i open it, it work for 5secs and boom ---bsod----

Tonight after work ill change the place of 9800gx2.Underneath it i have Creative XFI pro series.Ill try to move my vga to the first pci-e so it dont take the heat from the sound card and ill let you know.

Oh by the way after the bsod the pc reset back to normal mode and after 2 hours without playing any games i press shut down and i saw a bsod again . The only thing i run at that time was my webcam and google arround, nothing else.
