I have a 680i SLI mb (Gigabyte DQ6) and currently running an 8800GTX. It drives my Dell 30" and another 19" LCD just fine.

I'm thinking of step'ing up to a GX2 (only cost ~130$) but am worried about the inability of the GX2 to drive two monitors while in dual-gpu mode. (No, I can't afford another 8800GTX right now, and I prefer the single slot solution)

I have a free PCI and PCIE slot... can I stick a cheapo card in one of these extra slots and run the GX2 exclusively on the 30" and the other card on the 19" ? Are there any restrictions on brand/slot ? Should I get a cheap nVidia card? ATI? Is this just asking for troubles, or is it a commonly done thing?

Thanks!

The dual monitor issue with SLI enabled is supposed to be addressed in a future driver but I have no idea when.

You can drive another monitor from the PCI slot, and the 9800 GX2 does support dual monitors, you just have to switch SLI off, which apparently doesn't require a reboot.

So just from the PCI slot?

let's hope nvidia is on top of this quick because this is a major issue with SLI that needs to be fixed. can you get open gl acceleration on the 2nd monitor if it is being driven by a 2nd card? specifically for 3d graphics applications...i run maya and need that second monitor working with open gl acceleration

This is the sole reason I will not buy this card. I have the money now and am more than willing to part with it, however I refuse to give up a fully working display that is currently running fine on my Ultra for an additional $600 out of my pocket. When they fix this issue like ATI have with Crossfire then, and only then will the card be in my system.
