Hello! Well i am wondering if any one here folds with their 9800gtx and how many ppd they are getting... well i am only getting 1000.. but i heard some people with 9600gso getting around 5000? btw i am using a pcie 1.0 motherboard.. if i upgrade to a pcie 2.0 motherboard aka asus p5q pro(which i plan on doing by the end of the year) would i see at least 20% improvement as it supports pcie 2.0? Thanks!!

 
Each core in my 9800GX2s push more then 5k ppd.

No clue what is the cause though. :confused:

hmm so then i should def get more ppd(edit- then 1000)... i asked a friend and he is telling me because of the pcie 1.0? If so... then ill go order the p5q pro from newegg next week :) or later.
 
It's definitely not because of PCI-E 2.0. Go into Task Manager and take a look at the CPU usage of the GPU core (fahcore_11.exe). Since you're on a dual-core machine, it should be showing around 10-25% load from that process. If it's lower than that, the issue is probably caused by it not getting enough CPU time.

are you running any of the cpu clients as well? 9800GTX should get around 5k.. little overclock on the gpu/shader and you should hit 6k..

wait noticed in your sig you said you had the 9800GTX+.. you should easily be getting 5500 PPD on that or so.. especially since that card overclocks extremely well with it being a 55nm gpu.. you should get in the 6500-6600 PPD range..
 
Both my overclocked 9800GTX's are getting around 6,500 PpD.
One's in a x16 slot and the others in a x4 slot.
So as long as the slot its in is x4 or better, then slot speed has little impact on PpD.

It sound like something is stealing cycles from the GPU client.
Which OS are you useing, XP or Vista ??
What else are you running on the CPU ??

Well I am also in the same boat... Tried the Systray Client, Console clients upping the core priorities, etc etc.

One system is a 9650extreme @ 3.8ghz/4870X2 (1 CPU Core and 2x GPU Clients)

One is a Dothan 2.0 @ 2.3ghz and a 8800GTX

Im only seeing 1k ppd per gpu core... on two different boxes... unless im setting something up incorrectly Im kind of at odds myself.

 
Heck :eek: I get 4937 PpD = eVGA 9600GSO (shaders 1800, fan 80%) and I get 5841 PpD = PNY 8800GT (shaders 1875 fan 80%) so you should be getting way more than a thousand PpD :(

Tigerbiten, one of our most respected folders, says he gets 6,500 PpD on his 9800GTX's One of Tigers is a x16 slot and one is a x4 slot so I don't guess you're having a lane width prob (x16 vs less, as Tiberbiten posted x4 or better)
Maybe you need a driver update, but it sounds more like something is using CPU cycles on the same core as GPU2. If you're runnin' F@H or WCG clients be sure to lock them to the core/s not used by GPU2 (default core #3, use affinty in the task manager for WinXP)

 
Turn off any other folding program, just to check its not slowing the GPU client down.
Also which graphic driver are you useing ??

I use the environmental variable NV_FAH_CPU_AFFINITY to lock my nVidia GPU clients to the last CPU core.
How to do that is Here.
You can run upto 4 nVidia clients on one CPU core without a slowdown in PpD.
I then make sure that my VM's dont use that CPU core.
This slows the VM's down a little but the GPU client folds at full speed.

ok i checked the FahCore_11.exe the cpu shows above 14% all the time ... I am using vista ultimate 32bit... was on 64bit some time ago but had some driver problems :rolleyes:. The driver which i am using is 178.13(well i have two folders in there.. i don't uninstall the old one, could that be problem? even though i doubt it). Hmm so strange i had overclocked my gpu and applied it.. .then i went into evga precision and then it went back down to what it was before... it was at 740mhz for the core and standard for memory.. but now i brought it up to 760mhz for core and 1115 for memory 1885 for shader. Im also pretty sure the last time i checked cpu-z it said that the graphics card was running at x16.. ill check it again to make sure.. Thanks to everyone who posted!!

ninja edit - oh yea i forgot to mention, that in 3dmark06 a common system(specs are pretty close to mine) got 3000 more points then me....................................
ok checked the cpu-z what the... btw i did a circuit mod on my cpu where it runs at 1066mhz so i get clocked at 2.4ghz(which 3dmark06 says but cpu-z says my core speed for cpu is running at 1.6ghz!!e4300 btw) it does shows the graphics card running at x16 speeds though... also the DRAM freq is 400mhz!! my memory are ddrII 800mhz!!) i think its the motherboard? Oh and nothing else eating the cpu and only have 1 gpu folding client.... its on machine id 2 though :| Should i run the gpu at all cores? Thanks

Installing a new driver (especially on cards for folding) without uninstalling the old ones first sounds like it's causing your problem. Get Driver Sweeper and install it. Then uninstall all your drivers and boot into safe mode and run Driver Sweeper.

Reinstall new drivers after you reboot from Driver Sweeper and it should allow you to OC and fold on the card properly.

sorry don't really understand you,so first i install driver sweeper then go into safe mode to uninstall those old drivers then go back into windows normal mode to install the new one? Oh what is the key to boot into safe mode(Forgot)? Thanks!

 
After you install Driver Sweeper, use "Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs" to uninstall all Nvidia display drivers. Then reboot and use F8 to get the menu for safe mode. Run Driver Sweeper in safe mode and reboot to Windows normally and install your latest drivers.

It's ALWAYS a good idea to uninstall old display drivers before installing new ones.

ok i just done that :) on the latest driver now, 178.24... just got to wait for [H]'s FAH status to update so i will know how much ppd i am getting.. i installed fahspy but am confused on how to set it up.. so yea :eek: Thanks!

Just use the log to calculate your PDD.
  • Go to Start->Programs->FAH GPU->FAH Data Files
  • After it opens the folder, open FAHlog.txt
  • Get the length of time the last WU took to complete
  • Get the point value here

So as an example, if the WU took 2 hours and is worth 500 points, your PPD would be calculated as such:

(24 / 2) * 500

Being roughly how many of the WU you can get done in one day (24 hours per day / 2 hours for the WU) multiplied by the point value.

ok i went to display the F@H and its usually around 3200iter/sec sometimes it will go up to 5000iter/sec then go back down to 3000iter/se.... :/ I also went into the configuration and checked the slightly higher for core priority so hopefully that may help?

 
Dont use the display to monitor the client, as it slows the client down a lot.
Use either FahMon or FahSpy to monitor your client and see its PpD.
Thats the easier way and you PpD doesn't slowdown.

My boxen tend to be Quad's with multiple vid cards in.
So I'm running multiple clients as it maximizes my PpD per Watt figure.
But I'm still only running one GPU client per GPU core.

thx but don't know how to set up FAHspy.... also i only have 1 gpu and only plan on folding with gpu so what core would i need to set it with? Thanks!!

 
GPU client will automatically set its core if you're running 1 instance, and from what I've seen it's always the last core (core 1 for duals, 3 for quads).

As for FAHSpy/FAHMON, you need to point them at the folder containing the FAH data files. You can get the path by doing Start->Programs->FAH GPU->FAH GPU Data Files in your windows start menu folder. This will bring up windows explorer showing the FAH GPU data files. Copy the path from this folder and tell FAHSpy/FAHMON to point at it.

 
fah gpu folder is usually in the x:\Program Files\Folding@Home\Folding@home-gpu folder.. or atleast thats how its always installed it for me.. for some reason FAHmon doesnt work for me.. detects my gpu but not my cpu folding client so ive always stuck with FAHspy.. personally i like looking at FAHspy more because it gives a lot more information about what your gpu/cpu clients are doing and better predicted times of completion..

with the gpu client you can manually set FahCore_11.exe to what ever core to run at.. like some one said earlier it automaticly uses the last core on your cpu.. unless you have do NOT lock to specific core checked in your gpu client config.. since im using the older cpu client it doesnt lock it to a specific core so it uses all the cores availible which you can manually change.. only problem is when it changes between FahCore_82 and 81 i think it is.. then it resets the affinity settings.. but if im not mistaken the newer 6.21r client has the option to lock to a specific core.. just not sure which core it locks it too..

No, you want the clients to be locked to specific cores so they don't interfere with each other. You could try something like Bill2's Process Manager to manually set the affinity of the client to a single core, and then double-check in task manager to make sure that only one core is checked off when you right-click on a process and select Set Affinity.
 
Thanks! Well i decide not to do anything till i get my new motherboard the Asus p5q pro! Whee hehe, and wow weird i did no folding at all on my ps3 today but mysteriously my ppd went up to 1,400*rounded*.... and also it showed my processor at 3 *since like a few days ago*... strange is someone mysteriously folding for me?? If so who ever you are thanks!!
oh yea and i got up to 80,000 points and got a 3rd [H] badge seemed fairly quick :D.

possible or the server was slow at updating and finally gave you your points from projects you did a while ago..

oh that could be too.. and my ppd just jumped to 1,550 today... :eek: and again not folding at all with the ps3 for today and yesterday :).
