My 8800GT's OC higher and kick the [H] out of my 9800GT's. One 8800 is a Zotac the other PNY. Both OC exactly the same and score the same...logical. The 9800's are all BFG and none of them will approach the same OC as the 8800's. On average the 8800's are 200-500ppd better than the 9800's depending on wu which makes sense looking at the clocks. I use 177.35 drivers on the 8800's and have tried several drivers (currently 181.22) on the 9800's. Has anyone else experienced this or have a possible explanation?

9800 and 8800 are the same card in every shape and form except the voltages.. where as the 8800 is voltage crippled at 1.05v the 9800GT runs at 1.2v you can get the exact same overclock with the 8800GT and 1.1v bios mod as you can with a stock 9800GT.. i run my 8800GT at 760/1825/1015 gaming and 790/1900/900 folding.. with a duorb cooler..

the 9 series was nvidia's way to rip people off by trying to make a quick buck.. and they failed miserably.. which is why they rushed the GTX 200 series cards..

That's just it. I know the 8800/9800 are virtually identical and so I was expecting the performance to be very close if not the same. Instead, none of the 9800's will clock as high as the 8800's. Both 8800's run 725/1836/1000 rock stable and could probably go higher. The best the 9800's will do is 700/1728/950. My understand is the shader clock goes in 54Mhz increments. Any attempt to take the 9800 from 1728 to 1784 gives eue's. I tried lowering the core and memory while raising the shader and same result. I know not every identical card will OC the same but it just seems odd that as a group the 8800's I have kill the 9800's. Thanks for your help.

This kinda' confirms my personal results. I have a eVGA 8800GS and a eVGA 9600GSO. From my understanding the 9600GSO is just a rebrand of the 8800GS (I'm talkin' both GPUs having 96 shaders, not 48 like on the newer 9600GSOs) I've noticed the eVGA 8800GS ALWAYS gets about 100 to 200+ more PpD than the eVGA 9600GSO (no biggie, just interesting ). It doesn't matter matter what WU, what shader overclock and with the same CPU (Q6600, stock clock) feeding them. Everthing else is pretty much the same except two different boxen  Does the fact the 9600GSO is a "dual slot" make any difference

I don't have a 9800GT ATM, but I hope to water cool my eVGA 8800GT (just waitin' on UPS) I hope to add a cheap 9800GT in the same boxen and maybe get ny PpD back to over 10k (I know it ain't much, but every little bit helps ). Right now the 8800GT is being cooled by a ARCTIC COOLING ACCELS1 Rev 2 VGA Cooler with an udervolted 120mm fan. (the whole operation takes up too much space, I do love the cooler, it keeps my "fire breathing" GT to about 48c with an ambient of about 22c when running GPU2 24/7) :D

In the future I'd like to add one of the newer cards ( a GTX2xx), but I'll probably need a PSU upgrade, etc. I'm also doing the Win 7 beta OS and I'm pretty impressed (I'm doing the 32 bit and 64 bit versions, the 32 bit version seems more responsive to me  I'll probably replace my WinXP when it gets to RTM and I can afford it (gasp, replace good ole' XP ) . I'll just wait and see what happens ;)

DCing for the CURE

id blame the drivers if ones getting more then the other.. more then the card.. and a 725/1836/1000 overclocks pretty dang high if your using the stock voltage and stock cooling... what your seeing on the 9800GT is about avg thats what your 8800GT should be getting.. unless the cooling is borked on that 9800GT thats causing the SP's to overheat and throw off EUE's.. and the shader overclock step thing on the 8800GT/9800GT is 1836 then 1898 and least thats what it is on my 8800GT when i check it on rivatuner.. then it goes to 1928 or something.. but ive never been able to see if thats accurate because even changing my shader clock between those, rivatuner will keep it at 1836 until i hit 1880 then it will switch higher but between 1836 and 1898 my PPD changes.. so i have no clue if those steps matter..

The 177.** and 178.** drivers give the best PpD but load the CPU core to 100%.
The 180.60 or better drivers fold slightly slower but only loads the CPU core to a few %.
Which one you use is a matter of choose.

Also the shaders move in 54 Mhz steps.
Try 1728, 1782, 1836, 1890, 1944, 1998 as your shader speeds.

Luck ......... :D

Where did you get the bios mod?

used nebitor(sp?) and copied the original bios and just changed the voltage.. then loaded the new bios on a usb flash drive and flashed the card.. i should of changed the default clocks so i dont have to keep overclocking it everytime i boot up windows but oh well..
