Im thinking about taking the 9800gt 1 gb out of my brothers computer and using it for physics in my pc... however im a noobie at this...
so im asking if i could please get a brief summary on what really happens when i put a card in for physics
 
It takes the physx load of the other GPU(s). This only works in phyxs enabled games, but it will make quite a difference in these titles. You would have to ask around how to hack your ATI drivers to work with an nvidia card, all I know is that it has to be done.
 
If you are playing a PhysX game without hardware acceleration then you are accelerating PhysX on the CPU, so adding a card for PhysX would be taking the load off of the CPU in most cases.

It's worth noting however that most PhysX games have different levels of PhysX to accommodate different hardware. This results in game performance actually being slower with hardware physx in certain situations, but of course you'll have more particles, etc everywhere.

And it is correct that you will have to use hacked drivers. Nvidia has been in "sore loser" mode since ATI's 4xxx cards and they feel they need to maintain their market-share via artificial means such as limiting tech like PhysX from working when an ATI card is present.

As Fantasysage said, it simply allows the video card to process physics-related instructions. GPUs are designed differently from CPUs, and therefore are better for the types of calculations required for physics stuff (though CPUs are better than GPUs at processing other types of calculations).

Just like a video card speeds up 3D video calculations, a PhysX card will speed up PhysX calculations in games that support it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhysX#Title_support is a list of titles using the PhysX SDK, but not all of them support GPU PhysX. Batman:AA, Mirror's Edge, and Metro 2033 are the biggest GPU PhysX titles that I know of.

You're actually hacking the Nvidia driver, not the ATI driver. Nvidia added a check to their drivers which disables PhysX if it detects an ATI card installed in the system. GenL's patch modifies the Nvidia files to ignore that check.
