9800gt cannot output 2 dvi?

hello its my first post here

i have a 9800gt nvidia with 2 dvi outputs

just got the U2412M and i came across a wierd problem


1st dvi goes to vga =>U2412M
2nd dvi goes to hdmi => led40"


everything works fine exept windows cannon recognize 1920x1200
thats ok i can make a custom resolution and get beyond the limit of 1920x1080

the problem is that games dont have custom resolutions so cannot see 1200

so what i do is

1st dvi goes straight to U2412M without adaptors
2nd dvi goes hdmi => led40"

so here i am digital cable perfect quality and all games recognize 1200
led40" however has no signal

so i try an other setup

1st dvi goes hdmi => led40"
2nd dvi goes straight to U2412M without adaptors

now i can see led but U2412M has no signal

it seems that my gfx card cannot see both digital cables and one of them has to be vga

Sounds strange... almost any video card with two DVI ports can output to them (and at different resolutions) in 2D mode at the same time. Now I did notice you were trying to use an HDMI to DVI adapter/cable to use your 40" LED LCD TV... it has a maximum resolution of 1,920x1,080, less than the 1,920x1,200 of your Dell monitor. You have to set the resolutions through the Nvidia control panel to get them working the way you want.

My setup is similar with a Raedon HD4870 hooked up to my 32" LCD TV (1,366x768) and my Asus 23" LCD (1080p) both with HDMI to DVI cables, and the screen resolution set to 1,280x720 for both screens duplicating the same image when they are both on, and I have no problems.

like geforce said, you will have to use the nvidia drivers to control the displays, especially if its not correctly detecting the tv. also if you are doing cloned, it will force both displays to the same resolution. other then that it should work perfectly fine.

in order for nvidia panel to control both dispalys the system has to recognize them

and the system sends no signal to the 2nd unless one is in vga mode

It sounds like your second DVI port is broken. I've had a DVI port break on a 6800gt after an overheating incident.

no it works perfectly fine with vga adapter

I have the exact same issue with my gtx460. I just used a dvi -> VGA adapter but also ran into issues of my screen flickering on and off. I'm currently trying to get a replacement with Asus but it's been a pain in the butt. I sent it in for rma and they sent it back to me with the same issue. I called them a week ago and they said they would do an advance rma with me.......... but they won't send a replacement until they have the EXACT model that I have in stock.

When you use a VGA adapter on a DVI port you are not converting a digital signal to an analog signal. The port actually outputs both signals on different pins and the adapter selects the analog signal.

It's possible that the digital portion of this port is broken or your cable is broken.

Well after all this trouble, I downloaded the latest drivers (the ones that were released this week) and it fixed my issue. Give it a shot if you haven't already.
