9800 XT Problems

Hey all, I just got a Sapphire Radeon 9800 XT yesterday, and upon installing it, it gives nowhere near the performance I expected it to. Guys I play with push over 700FPS in Medal of Honor Spearhead, with lesser cards, and I can hardly get 400. I tried with settings on maximum performance, and maximum quality, and also using Overdrive, and none of them did anything. Here are my system specs:

Pentium 4 2.4 ghz (no hyperthreading)
1 gig RD ram
Intel D850MV motherboard
Creative Soundblaster Live 5.1 surround system

I installed the card very quickly just to see if it works (ie I didn't install drivers first, I let windows recognize it and update the drivers, and then installed the packaged drivers after). I'll be reformatting tonight, so that will help my performance, but I should definitely be getting more than 350FPS in a game all by myself as is. You guys are pros, so your advice is greatly appreciated.

60 FPS is perfectly smooth for most people. Why do you care if you get *only* 350 FPS? It's smooth, and you're running an old game, so why are you complaining?

Don't get me wrong, the game runs beautifully. But I'd feel cheated if I spent $400 on a video card to achieve lesser performance then other people who spent far less than I did. Wouldn't you?? 350FPS vs 700+ is a huge difference, whether the game is old or not.

Someone can correct me if im wrong. But the 9800xt is directx 9 card. Your old card was a derctx8 more than likely. And your playing directx8 games. So obviously a directx9 card is not going to be "perfect" on directx 8 games. When youll really see the difference is when you play some true directx 9 games.

Testing a new card thats developed for DX9 with a game that was developed during the early stages of dx 8 isnt going to net you great results or an accurate idea of what your system can do. If you want a good benchmark, get 3dmark2003 and see what you pull with that, most people with setups similar to yours get about 6000 marks with a 9800xt. If you get around 6000 your system is find and the drop in fps from 700 to 350 can probably be attirbuted to dx issues.

The problem is, though, that the people I mentioned are playing the same exact game, and getting 700FPS, so if they can get it, why can't I?

I'm going to do 3DMark2003 tonight after I reformat, and you are right in that if I can get a score like that, my card and setup aren't the problem. I think reformatting and installing correctly will help, but we'll soon see.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it alot. I'll post on here and let you know how it works when I'm done.

Most likely they have a high end Nvidia to be pushing FPS like that. Remember almost all quake engine based games run better on Nvidia.

And that's becuase they use OpenGL, which runs better on Nvidia cards.

One guy gets that FPS with a Radeon 9800 Pro. Another gets even better with a 5900 Ultra. My card is better than both and our systems are somewhat similar (though the Radeon guy has hyperthreading), so shouldn't my FPS be comparable? Here are screens of their FPS in action:

Either way the Nvida will pull ahead. Whats the resolutions? That can also play a factor. They may be playing at 1280x1024, you 1600x1200.

hydr0, your results are perfectly OK for your system. If you had a hyperthreaded P4 at 3.4 Ghz and an i875 mobo with dual-channel DDR, you'd have even more fps.

Also, MOHAA is a OpenGL game since it is based on the Q3 engine so, nvidia is known to have better OpenGL performance.

Just wondering if anyone noticed the naked girl on the compass or radar of the nvidia guy's screen shot. lol

Anyways anything over 100fps is overkill for me. I'd be happy with even 60-70 fps.

Is this thread for real? Multiple factors come in, like say... CPU speed, memory speed, game and driver settings... etc.

BTW, that second pic is *NWS*.. better put some blinders on her.
