Hi all,

So I just got a 9800xt card. I started running some initial bench's and it kept freezing or simply turning screen black then the monitor would report no signal. I notiiced the temps are in the 60's and the card is stock. I turned down my proc clocks to see if that was the problem and played with the agp voltage. I'm not sure if the temps are legit. At boot they are at almos 58 C. I also get errors with mbmm for my proc temp. Anyway I don't get artifacting so I don't think it is heat. I have a 480 watt power supply and it hasn't had problems yet. Then again I do have a lot of stuff in my case. I had a similer problem with the 9700 but it wen't away with new power sup. Even tho it is 480 it isn't the best in the world as far as quality goes.

Heres what I got in it.
4 uv cold c's
4 12 volt fans
1 80 gig drive
2 sata raptors
a dvd burner
lcd fan controller
1 12 volt pump

any hints? I tried the drivers that came with the card and the lates 4.3's. Next up I will try the omegas. Also may case is open and there is fairly good airflow inside. I just did a clean install last week.

have you tried going to agp 4x? I had an msi kt6 board before and I had the exact same problems as you. I did a lot of searching over on the official msi forums and it seems that it's a common issue with ati cards and msi boards where the problems would go away once changed to 4x. I now just moved to a dfi lanparty board and the problems are completely gone even at 8x.

yah try doing what he said. if that doesnt work it sound like an RMA should be done

Thanks for the info. I have been so busy with benchmarking that I haven't even tried any games yet. I installed riva tuner and it shows my temps at being 45 c which seems about right. I found someone else and they said that they found the same high temps in the overdrive tabs. Ack, you can only trust software temps so much. I'll give the 4x a go and see how that is.

the reason your temps r higher in overdrive is this. the temp sesore is not right on the core, so in rivaturner your seeing the actual temp on the probe, and all that overdrive does is add 20C to compinsate for that. and the temps r fine, i get the same temps on mine.

So I did a complete re-install of my OS and it is working good. So far I got 17,600 in 3d mark. This is of course stock with no changes to any settings.
