9800 vs 5900xt situation.

Ok, let me give you a little background. I recenlty upgraded my motherboard, cpu, and ram..see sig. I have AGP. I am having a problem anytime I raise the FSB over 255. I was able to raise the FSB to 300 and run prime 95 for a few hours, but as soon as I start playing a game, it crashes and gives me one of the following errors:
"nv4_disp has been caught in an infinite loop..."
"nv4_disp has stopped working..."

I have tried EVERYTHING to correct this and nothing is working, so I'm thinking of going ATI. Right now my BFG 5900xt is flashed to a 5950 ultra and OCd to 475/900. Would I be wasting my money to get a 9800 Pro(256-bit of course)? I mean I guess the card is better performace right, plus I should be able to get to 300 FSB with it. I don't have the money right now to get a really good card, what do you think??
 
If you're buying used then the 9800 is a great buy. If new, go for a 6600GT. Although AFAIK, ATi cards are more sensitive to overclocking. Is your AGP/PCI clock locked?
 
AV8 rev 2 is supposed to have a working AGP lock. Do you have rev 2? If so, make sure agp is locked down.
 
From personal experience, the 5950U and the 9800pro will feel almost exactly the same, speed wise. Why do you think the ATI card will go to 300fsb while the Nvidia can go to only 255? That shouldn't matter at all, since your board must have agp/pci locks to be up at 300fsb. And even if it didn't, nvidia cards are better at handling out-of-spec busses. My old 9700pro could only take a 70mhz agp bus, while my 5950U could take a 76mhz agp bus.

Looks like your rig simply isn't stable at 300fsb.
 
The only reason I want to get the 9800 is so I can get my FSB higher. Anytime I go over 255, nv4_disp fails. I've tried several drivers and crap and yes, I installed them correctly :)

How do I tell if my board is a revision 2? It has a "Fixed" option in the bios for AGP/PCI. I've read about this problem from several other poeple too. Even people with 7800s and VIA chipsets have this same damn problem...some at stock speeds....that's why I am thinking ATI...that seems to be the only way around this. Believe me, I like nVidia better...but if it ain't gonna work....

So, theoretically speaking...If I can hit 300FSB with the ATI card, is it worth it...for a used?
 
Maybe a new motherboard instead, probably cheaper that way. The FX cards dont have good resale value because of all the bad stigma that surrounds the series as a whole.

That means nothing. If the system is unstable, random drivers and stuff will crash and cause the whole system to go down. Just because the nvidia display driver was the "offending" dll doesn't mean anything. It could still very well be cpu/ram/chipset instability.

Anyway, the "fixed" option in the bios is SUPPOSED to lock the agp/pci bus, but Abit messed up with that mobo and the lock will drop in and out. And if your lock drops out at 300fsb, it doesn't matter WHAT video card you have, the system is going down. On the mobo where it says "AV8" there should also be a version number. If you've got a version 1 then sorry man, nothing you can do to stabalize those high htt's.
 
Have you moved back to the 71.89 drivers? They appear to be the most stable, and people (such as myself) have experienced weird crashed with the 77.72s. Have you tried reseating the videocard? If it has slipped out at all you can have the errors you are describing.

 
If buying a new card a 6600GT is a wiser choice than the 9800PRO but I'm not sure either will remedy your FSB problem.
 
well, I borrowed a friends ATI 9200. My FSB is now at 289 and I have been playing cs:source for about an hour with no probs. It locked up after about 30 seconds with my nvidia. The FPS are way low, but thats because the 9200 sux bad. Needless to say, I think I'm going for a refurbed 9800 pro....or somthing ATI
