Well, I'm looking at a new graphics card again, since I fried my 9500 pro with intense overclocking and overvolting, and I'm really not satisfied with the performance of my friend's 9600 pro. I'm looking at either a 9800 se which I would softmod (omega drivers) to the 9800 pro, or a 9800 pro refurb for around $150 off newegg. Which would be the safer choice? How many of you have had successes with the 9800 se to pro softmod? Which brand do you have?

i have a powercolor 9800se and it softmodded perfectly to 9800pro. i can overclock it to > XT speeds too, so im not complaining. just be certain that you get the 256-bit card and not the 128.

and i have NEVER had a good experience with newegg refurbs......

yeah that powercolor se looks like a good deal and most of the reviews on newegg, around 80%, haven't had a problem with the mod.... i'm just a little worried, if it doesn't mod then i'm stuck with a card not much better than what i have now.... i guess i could always sell it again

as for overclocking to xt... that sounds great... i think an artic cooling vga silencer will cool well enough

I'd do the pro and oc as far as you can. For that price point, it's not worth the risk/mess. Just go for the real one and overclock as far as you can.

my powercolor 9800se softmods on my friend's dell but not on mine. Spent like 2 weeks tryin to figure it out but i ended up selling it to my friend. Oddest thing i swear.

well... if i did buy the refurb 9800 pro it would have to perform as sold... otherwise i'm sure i could get an rma with newegg ... i've had nothing but good experiences with them

the more i think about it... since both cost around the same the refurb might be the safer choice
