I just bought a ati 9800 pro from newegg and I currently have a nvidia 5200 ultra in my computer. When I switch from the 5200 to the 9800, I boot up my computer and it looks like im looking through a kaleidoscope. It happens right away at the soyo dragon screen. Is this just a bad card or what? any ideas

What do you mean by "looks like your looking through a kaleidoscope" If it happens @ the bios screen it sounds like a card issue to me. Do you have good airflow in your case? The 9800pro generates a lot more heat than the 5200u. How big of a powersupply do you have and what brand is it? Also, what are your system specs?

it just looks like red/black diamond shapes kind of like you would see throught a kaleidoscope. it happens right away at the bios screen. i doubt it has to do with heat it doesnt even get a chance to heat up. the power supply is a 550 watt antec true control. specs are p4 3.06 ghz, 1 gig corsair xms, soyo dragon 2 v1 black label mobo.

should i do this before i install the video card? because i cant install the drivers when i cant see anything but some shapes
 
well, if it happens at the bios then it seems like a defectice card

ionno if this would work but try putting the 5200 back in and uninstall the drivers and put the 9800pro back in to see if anything changes
 
first it would be good to format. second install the drivers
 
I've had this happen to me to a AIW 9700 pro.
On the biox the picture is all messed up and looks like it's cut up into tiny pieces....right?
But it only happened once in a while...

Put the Geforce back in and try uninstalling the Geforce drivers and do the Driver Clean.
Then try putting the Card in.
 
drivers have absolutely nothing to do with a messed up bios screen. drivers dont come into effect untill windows starts to load. everything before that are hardware issues.
i would do as Major_A suggested and make sure the fan is spinning. A card can go from ice cold to burning up in under 5 seconds (remember all the old athlon processors that people didnt put the heatsink on right?).

what are you blabbering about. formatting is the best thing you can do for any hardware install as long as you dont have any useful info on the drive, i format my HD everytime i get something new, which is almost every month, whether its a new mobo or a sound card...
 
Don't waste your time with reformatting/reinstalling windows - that's not going to fix this problem. Sounds like the video card is defective, can you try it in another computer to verify that it works or not?
