Hmmm even with the 9600xt's faster 525 core and faster than normal 650 mem speeds?
 
If you're looking for value, any benchmark will show you that the pro has it over the XT.
Just divide the price by the FPS. :)

I bought my 9800pro for that reason.

It's a very capable card.
Runs Doom3 fine, with all the bells and whistles.
 
Well, you did say this was to tide you over, so maybe you could go on the (slightly) cheaper side this round, particularly since the XT you're looking at has all those neat All-In-Wonder features that might be very useful if you decide to build some sort of Home Theatre PC once you get the X800... you brat...
 
Despite the higher core and memory speeds of the 9600XT, the 9800 Pro is still faster because it has 8 pixel processing pipelines rather than the 4 that the 9600XT has. I have both cards, and the 9800 Pro spanks the 9600XT.... but that doesn't mean that the 9600XT is a bad card. It's actually the best mid-range video card I've ever had in terms of performance.
 
yea i love my 9600XT but would trade it for a 9800Pro in heartbeat ^^
 
Like was said the 9800 pro has twice the pipelines. So the core of the 9800 pro would only need to run at half the MHz of the 9600XT to have the same theoretical fillrate and shader power.... check. The 9800pro (at least the real PRO's) use a memory interface considered 256 bits wide vrs. the 9600XT's 128 bit. So again it would have the same theoretical bandwidth as a 9600XT at half the memory MHz..... check. They are based on the same architecture so even though you cant always judge on solely these things, in this case you get pretty damn close.

Go ahead and buy the 9600XT as a hold over if it's features appeal to you since you may retire it early. If you were planning on gaming and keeping it awhile, well then it would have to be the 9800pro. You will get sick of hobbling along on a 9600XT unless that upgrade comes along before then.

9800pro can play Doom3 at 1024*768 on high as well as farcry. With farcry you can make some concessions like dropping a few settings off of high but then running 1280*960. The 9600XT can't. I wouldnt want to be gaming at 800*600 with a card I just got in the mail unless I had good reason too.... like the quick upgrade and the retirement to an HTPC setup. Of course we're ball-parking but at least you should now understand the MHz issue on both core and mem. The 9800pro is twice the card at the same MHz. V8 with a fat pipe vrs. V4 with a narrow one.
 
I am looking at the same kinda question. Mine is between the 9600xt AIW or
the 9800 pro. I have a limited budget of 200 so both cards are in my grasp.
AIW features or pure power? What is the diffrence in proc. power?
I also am dealing with the pci express (new mobo someday or soon?) being the
standard soon. What I would like to know is percentages. An example."The 9800 pro
is on an average 5%-10% better in games than the 9600XT". Get the idea? Anyone
know the percent diffrence on average between these two gpu's?

The difference is really large. I'd expect a 9800pro being at least 50% faster, possibly more with aa/af.

I've had this discussion on other threads and almost everyone here says that the 9800pro preforms between 30%-40% better than the 9600XT (that's still pretty large).

And you'd probably be right about this difference increasing as the resolutions get higher.
 
and that 9800 pro u linked has a R360 core so basicly its a 9800xt. Your computer will recognize it as an XT. It just doesnt have 256 mb ram.

Yep. I love my 9600xt, but this was when the 9600xt cost me $165 and the 9800pro's were still in the $300 range. At that point, it was worth getting the 9600xt. As far as AIW support. If you don't need video in, but rather want just TV, get the 9800pro and the new HDTV Wonder, you'll be able to watch HDTV if available in your your area.
 
9800P easily. I see ATI managed to screw with people's minds with all the crap they put out. My 9700NP is faster than the 9600XT.

So your going to spend $200 on a 9800 Pro, which is the better card, until your $550+ x800 XT ships in one/two/three weeks???? This doesn't make any sense to me.

Why not just order a x800XT from a vendor that has them in stock right now and skip the whole 9600/9800 sidebar??

edit: okay just saw your reply about having a second system. :) 9800 Pro all the way.

depends on the ram that comes on the card, some cards come with DDR2.

That being said, My sapphire 9800 Pro is bios modded into a 9800XT 256MB.
 
It will be 4 weeks (10/15 ETA) till shop.ati.com has the x800 XT PE in or so they say. I ordered it with the 10% off coupon (thanks [H] for the tip) so it will be $464 w/shipping. My second sys could use a faster card then the old 9500pro and I am just using the on board video on my new system so it sucks as you can imagine ;) Just ordered a 9800pro at Newegg.com along with an original model artic-cooler for $220 w/shipping. Now maybe I will be able to play some games at decent settings again :D Thanks again for all the info and suggestions!
