9800 pro stock cooling

Pretty darned far. I put on an Arctic Cooling VGA silencer and only got an extra 10 mhz out of my core!

I pulled off my stock cooler and replaced the factory compound with shin-etsu. Made little difference, it goes to 460 without a hitch. Some of the later 9800pros clock well.

I also tried a copper Iceberq on it (from my dead 9700pro RIP), it made no difference over stock cooling.

Went back to stock cooler and it works fine.

460/what

i was increasing both incrementally and noticed artifacting at ~ 410/370, could i t have been the ram and not the core?

The VGA silencer isnt ment to get you higher o/cs

GPU cores to me seem voltage limited... not temp
GPU cores runs MUCH hotter than a CPU and the VGA silencer cuts that temp almost in half... increasing life

The lowered temps most likly make the core more efficient

The question does not have have an answer. How far can you push it w/ the stock cooler? Find out! The manufacturing process leaves a whole lot of leeway in the quality of the chip you will receive. You just don't know until you push it.

Myself, my 9800 Pro (OEM) would do 417 artifact free w/ stock and 435 artifact free w/ a VGA silencer and 445 w/ water cooling.

Everyone else has a different story, because each chip is different, and each cooler is different, and everyone's skill with thermal compund is different, and everyone's ambient temp is different.

You just have to find out for yourself. The only thing you can be reasonably sure about is that you willl get something more from enhanced aftermarket cooling. How much? I don't know, you'll just have to find out! :)

That core will run 460 all day without a hitch. The damned memory is the problem child, it artifacts at 360, and it has OCZ ramsinks on it to boot. Can't have everything.

do ramsinks really do anything?
